How did Sir Syed Ahmad Khan manage to create cordial relations between the
Muslims and the British? Justify your answer with at least five points. 10 Marks

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan eradicated misunderstandings between the Muslims and the British
infused after the war of independence in 1857
1. He motivated Muslims to learn Western philosophy and English literature to get along
with the ruling people. He was of the opinion that honor of the nation could be achieved
only by education. His efforts for Muslim education served a double purpose. It helped
the Muslims to get good jobs and raised their status in society.
2. In 'Tabyin-ul-Kalam' Sir Syed pointed out the similarities between Islam and Christianity.
Due to lack of resources, the work was not finished, but it showed Sir Syed's commitment
to improving relations between British and Muslims.
3. In 1860 Sir Syed wrote 'The Loyal Mohammedans of India'. In this work, he defended the
Muslims from the British allegation that they were disloyal. He gave a detailed account
of the loyal services rendered by the then Muslims and named various Muslims who had
shown particular loyalty to the British. At the same time, he called on the British to end
their hostility towards the Muslim community.
4. He writes many books to devote that Muslim were not responsible for the revolt of 1857.
5. Sir Syed won the British confidence and cordial relationship by saving their lives during
the War of Independence. He utilized this relationship for the betterment of the Muslims.
It was a bad situation because the government had put the War crimes on the Muslim
shoulders and assaulted their every aspect of life: “These events were a trauma for the
Muslims; …the methods used by them shocked the civilized world
