Perception

How can our understanding of perception help us become more effective communicators?

Perception is a process where we select, organize, and interpret information to make sense to

ourselves (Weintraub et al., 2015). Basically, everyone has a different perception of information based

on how they process the information relayed to them. Even answering this question will be slightly different for our class since we each interpret and organized the question in different ways. Based on this interpretation of perception, it can help us become more effective communicators by recognizing the fact that each person’s perception may be different from yours. This is handy in the nursing field when dealing with patients and staff members because you can adjust your communication accordingly to rephase or clarify any possible miscommunications. This is beneficial to minimize or prevent any harm or malpractice to the patient.

Example

Think of time when you interacted with someone from a different culture. Using the

communication model, how did your conversation evolve? Was there a miscommunication.

Growing up as a military brat, I have gotten use to dealing with people from different cultures

early in life. However, the only time I really had an issue of miscommunication with someone

from a different culture was once and on social media. The conversation evolved when I gave an

alternative perception on the subject matter in a social group. The subject matter was about

explaining lifestyles, choices, disabilities, race, religion, ect. My perception was that I will

explain to my children different topics as they arise. At the time my youngest children were 1

and 3 years old. The response I received was not the best. Being a bad parent was not the worst

thing I was called. I did take the time to respond to some of the people with there comments as I

did recognize that they did not quite understand what I was saying. After awhile most people

were able to understand where I was coming from.

Change

What could you have done differently?

In the case of the post, I could have not made a comment at all or I could have left those people

feeling upset because of their perception of my statement.

In the words of McLean, “To understand communication with others also requires self-

knowledge” (McLean, 2018). If I did not have some understanding of communications with others,

I would not have had the confidence and knowledge about myself to go back and respond to

people who did not understand my statement.
