Briefing
Thank you for participating in this study about online calendar use. Your contribution to this
research is invaluable for our project. In this study we will ask you to perform several tasks
using an online calendar system for University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students, mILife.
The reason we are conducting this survey is because we are trying to design an online calendar
combined with a few new features. The goal of this research is to seek opinions about the new
features and whether students will continually use mILife. We will read instructions for each
task. As you perform these tasks, we ask that you think aloud and let us know why you choose
to do the actions that you do to get your task accomplished. At any time, you may stop the
study. We appreciate your honesty and willingness to participate in this survey.

User Evaluations Jason Chen, Laura Chu, Cassie Yue

The goal of this user evaluation is to seek opinion about the features of mILife and to see if students would continually use mILife daily to help organize their life as a student. This study asks participates to perform several tasks to try different features with pre and post questionnaires. Each study took about 20 minutes to perform. For this specific evaluation, the goal is to test the interface and layout.

Tasks In Task 1, all but two participants struggled with this task. They were unsure where to go. They would read out the different links on the calendar trying to think of where this information can be found. Participants tried clicking on a CS 465 event, while others clicked on the check box below the “show” section to see where it would lead. After they click around for a while, we pointed out that there is the course tab and suggested to look there. Six of the participants commented that they did not see that tab. After finding the tab, five of the participants did not have a problem locating the office hours and had positive comments about this section of the system. The remaining participant could not find where the office hours were even after being pointed to the course tab.

Once again in task 2, the same participants struggle to add the event. They did not notice the add event calendar button. They wanted to click on the day’s box or the number to add an event. This is based on learned experiences with other calendars like Google. Once they discovered the button, they like the popup feature and thought for the most part easy to use. A few commented on the time options. Some did not like how the end time needs to be set. Half chose to just have the same start and end time, but were not satisfied. Others simply guessed end times. Also, six of the participants noticed that type of event and used it while, others did not see it. Participant 2’s task was to add a study group and chose to place it the course calendar because it had to do as school. He did not have the same intention of how we sorted out the calendars. He was viewing personal as his own events, and a study group was for a class and should be placed under courses.

For task 3, all but one of the participants were able to successful complete this task without any problems. That one participant was confused because she did not think that exams should go under the Assignments calendar. She suggested that we have a separate calendar for Exams.

Lastly in task 4, half of the users went to the courses page to the assignment links view the description. They did not realize that the description can also be found on the calendar when click on the view the event. The other half found the description easily by clicking on event in the calendar.

Conclusion According to these user evaluations, there appears to be many helpful features that the participants liked. However, the features appear that they need to be learned or pointed out.

Ideally, an additional study would be performed over several weeks to a semester to see how this interface plays into the life of a student. The participant would be given several questionnaires to get an update and opinion on mILife. The study would conclude with a final questionnaire.
