Procrastination is an act in which a person decides to postpone or put off task until the last minute of its deadline. Due to school work. students are having a hard time managing things so they tend to procrastinate. For example, the teacher gives an activity that has to be submitted next week but they just spend the time doing leisure activities. They are not aware that they waste too much time already but miraculously, they can still manage to accomplish the school works in the limited time they have. The speech states that individuals can still accomplish it because of the panic monster inside the human brain that forces the rational decision-maker skills to do everything it can under pressure. The speaker is humorous and relatable so it easily catches the attention of the audience. His speech is indeed relevant up until today because people are continuously procrastinating whether it is short-term or long- term. This TED Talk will enlighten the viewers and the listener to know the point of view of a man that is used to procrastinating and how he handled it by analyzing how it works through oneself. Tim Urban is evidently humorous and relatable that results to catch the attention of the audience. According to Bennett (2016) To become an effective public speaker is not an easy task to accomplish. Being an effective public speaker encompasses a lot more than people might assume. Good speakers must develop and possess certain qualities and personality traits that set them apart from mediocre speakers. Speaker must have the five qualities, these are: the confidence, passion, ability to be succinct, ability to tell a story, and audience awareness. All these qualities are visible as Tim Urban speaks in front of the crowd. He has enough confidence and compassion to maintain his posture and roam around the stage. In the beginning of his talk, he shared his own procrastination experiences that lead to where he is. This serves as a stepping stone that makes the audience in engage and to carefully listen to him. He can easily build a strong relationship among his listeners, that is why his speech ended with a meaningful and fruitful takeaway that will be beneficial to his listeners. However, he only wears a simple plain shirt and jeans which makes him look like an ordinary person and not as a speaker. Bonnie Berry’s 2008 research on physical appearance also shows that communicator attractiveness influences how an audience perceives the credibility of the speaker. Overall, more attractive speakers were thought to be more credible.
The speaker uses a different tone of voice that is suitable to what he is pertaining when delivering his speech therefore, it will not sound boring. He speaks clearly and precisely enough to understand every word he says without stuttering a word. He always ensures to make genuine eye contact with the audience to build intimate rapport. His facial expression and hand gestures are handled smoothly and naturally. However, at the end of his speech, he talks fast and the speech does not seem to have a falling action or a signal that it will end soon. This will make the listener confused in his last statement. To justify this more, a speaker’s confidence, emotional state, and attitude is often revealed in the tone of voice. In the area of public speaking, your voice becomes a powerful instrument that allows you to engage, charm, and encourage your audience to listen. When delivering a speech, your tone and body language must be appropriate to what your speech should be. (Nikitina, 2011) The visual aids that he used are witty and not complex so it boosts audience feedback. As he presents the procrastinator’s system where he illustrates the three characters inside of our mind which are the rational decision-maker, instant gratification monkey, and the panic monster. This helps the audience to picture out what is going on inside our mind when we procrastinate and how it works. His speech can easily be remembered because he provided a visual to make it more understandable. According to Gini Beqiri (2018) Visuals can help the audience to both see and hear what the speaker is conveying that will be more likely to keep hold of the information. It can enhance the presentations and it can increase the audience’s understanding of your topic, explain points, make an impact and create enthusiasm. Learning can also occur through sight, which is why visuals are a necessary tool for effective presentations. Abraham Lincoln once said that “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” Because people tend to do the mañana habits, they get sluggish most of the time and they tend to put off some tasks that could have been done right away. As Tim Urban says, to be able to stop being a procrastinator, it needs to stay aware of Instant Gratification Monkey so that the Panic Monster also will not show up. To be a rational decision-maker is the only main goal and the one who is controlling the human brain in order to be productive and accomplish everything on time with great results. Rather than procrastinating, having a gritty attitude is a must. It is about having a burning passion and perseverance to finish the task and achieve a satisfactory outcome. This allows each individual to live their life to the fullest without having a regret because they know that they maximized their capacity and find a way to scare the monkey inside their brain.
