It is a purposive exploration.

1.1 Definition of research

The search for facts may be made through either (a) uninformed (or unscientific) method or (b) scientific method. Stating a question & seeking its answer. Evaluating a question and answer previously considered by others. Synthesizing obtainable knowledge to develop an answer. Discovering new knowledge – knowledge is the interpretation of facts. 1.1 Definition of research

Indian Ocean Dipole The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is a coupled ocean-atmosphere phenomenon in the Indian Ocean. It is normally characterized by anomalous cooling of SST in the south eastern equatorial Indian Ocean and anomalous warming of SST in the western equatorial Indian Ocean. Associated with these changes the normal convection situated over the eastern Indian Ocean warm pool shifts to the west and brings heavy rainfall over the east Africa and severe droughts/forest fires over the Indonesian region.

Assumptions about the students: You will conduct or be required to do research. You have basic knowledge of economic theories. You know basic statistics and social sciences analytical techniques. You are able to think abstractly. You think critically (but not in extreme form – cynicism, which is a barrier to understanding). You have the ability to synthesize from the facts and information in front of you. Ability to discern privately held beliefs from concepts supported by evidence – ie. need for objectivity. You are currently initiating a research project What Is Economics Research? Economics Research defined as much by the way of thinking as by the subject matter.

Subjective method: Subjective method in quest of answers to questions is based on imagination, values, opinion, blind belief or impression. Scientific method: This is a systematic rational approach to seeking fact. .“Reason for Studying Research Methodology. “ The central reason for studying research methodology is that it provides a time-tested, proven means of producing new, reliable knowledge. That accumulated, growing body of knowledge comprises a discipline, or perhaps a ‘science’”

Stating a question & seeking its answer. Evaluating a question and answer previously considered by others. Synthesizing obtainable knowledge to develop an answer. Discovering new knowledge – knowledge is the interpretation of facts. 1.1 Definition of research

Justification for the Study of Research Methodology: Need for formal, focused attention within the economics discipline on how to organize and conduct research in applied economics. Two central objectives: Overview of the conceptual and philosophical basis of research methodology in economics. Procedural guidelines on planning, designing, and conducting research projects.

It is objective and logical, applying possible tests to validate the measuring tools and the conclusions reached. It is based upon observable experience or empirical evidence. Research is directed towards finding answers to pertinent questions and solutions and solutions to problems. It emphasizes the development of generalization, principles or theories.

The purpose of research is not to arrive at an answer, which is personally pleasing to the researcher, but rather one, which will stand up the test of criticism. More emphasis on ‘real world’ problems and the application of economic research to them; More emphasis on communication skills, especially writing, and the ability to relate economic knowledge to the public. Paradigm Shift for Success: Not determined solely by the understanding of theories or technique.

1.2.2 Finding a research question.

Start with a general area of interest & refine to a research question. What interests you? Personal experience, topics from classes, current events.. Would this interest others?

1.2.2 Finding a research question.

Start with a general area of interest & refine to a research question. What interests you? Personal experience, topics from classes, current events.. Would this interest others?

What have others done? Extend it, or do it in a different setting. Is it doable? Not too broad, not more work than you can do, data needed are available or can be acquired. Get a few ideas & critique them. Your first idea may not be the best, may need to be refined significantly or even dropped.
