BUSINESS REQUIREMENTS:

Project Name:

Business Need:

 To initiate the culture of buying second hand books and benefiting from them in a cost effective manner.  To provide convenience to the poor students who can’t buy new books every semester.

Functionality Provided:

Using the web, students should be able to sell and buy old books online at cheap rates. The focus will be to provide old books for SEECS students and the students of some other universities and schools too. Students should be able to:

 Search for a book to check its availability.  View book catalogue.  Place an order for one or more books.  Receive confirmation that their order has been placed and an expected delivery date.  Place a request to the administrator incase required book isn’t available.  Receive their order in a timely manner.  Get home delivery service within Islamabad and Rawalpindi (Initially) at affordable charges in case of inability to collect the order personally.

Expected Value:

Tangible: Sufficient revenue earning and funds generation for NSEECS since we are getting old books by paying a seller 10% of the original price of a book to attract them and selling them in turn to others at 30-40% discount from its original price.

Intangible:

 Improved customer satisfaction.  A unique platform for students to sell and buy the books easily while in the university as well as online.  Convenience of home delivery, searching for a book online and placing an order online, since internet is a hot area these days so it’s convenient to sell/purchase online.

Special Issues or Constraints:

 Getting an attractive lot of students offering their old books for auction.  A constraint of our system is that it doesn’t allow online payment through credit card and thus rely on payment on delivery.  In perspective of NSEECS, there are no competitors so our auction would be running smooth without any competitive pressure.

Technical Feasibility:

Familiarity with Application (high)  We need not have a whole department consisting of many staff members for running this project/business instead it needs an administrator and a website manager both chosen from students.  No complexities to cater for as compared to other online auctions since we are dealing with only one type of item i-e books and also because we are not providing the functionality of online payments.

Familiarity with Technology (high)  Development tools for commercial web application development will used to design the website so it will be very easy to handle and use.

Project size (moderate)  We estimate that our project/business will be moderate in size.  With some effort, we can update our system to implement online payment through credit card also.

Economic Feasibility:  Per book we have to pay the donor 10% of the original price of the book depending on its condition too and a book is sold on 30-40% discount so we get around 60% of the original price of the book.

Additional Comments:  Industry experts predict that in the coming era, maximum sales will be from the internet. Using these assumptions, revenue could increase if we expand our system outside NSEECS.  We will also need some of the people for order delivery at homes.

Customer: an entity set representing record of customers of our auction.

Seller: an entity representing all the sellers who have sold old books to our online store. In fact it represents a record of all the sellers for future reference. For example: in order to contact them every month or so and asking for any available old books so that they may be collected from them.

Request: an entity set representing a request made by any customer online incase the required book is not available. In which case, his/her request will be acknowledged and the administrator will try to arrange for that book within 3 days by contacting the sellers in our record.

Order: an entity set representing an order made by a customer online which will be acknowledged by the administrator by sending an acknowledgment back to the customer also informing him/her about the bill and expected delivery date and time etc.

Sale: a relationship set which relates a seller with the book sold to the online auction store and it will be added in the inventory.

Buy: a relationship set which relates a customer with the book purchased from the online auction store updating its copies in the inventory likewise.

Make: a relationship set which relates a customer with the request for a required book if its unavailable.

Place: a relationship which relates a customer with the order he/she places for the required books online.

WORK FLOW DIAGRAM:

REVENUE MODEL:

Firms or businesses can pursue a variety of revenue models. SEECS Online Book Auction store may follow the revenue model which is “Sale/Purchase of books”. The reason is that our online store will offer students to sell or donate their old books and to purchase available second hand books on discounted prices. Moreover since it offers home delivery so we’ll be charging a delivery fees also. We are actually giving an option to the customer to get his/her order delivered at home incase he/she can’t collect it from SEECS where we are providing the facility to pay and get the required book from the administrator, depending on its availability.
