Instructions/Exam info: To prepare for the exam: read the textbook (Ch. 1, 2, 3 & 5), study all
lectures, and review discussion section content. The exam will be comprised of 25 multiple
choice questions (60% of exam grade) and 4 short answer questions (40%). The Moodle forum
“Exam I Q & A” will allow students to post questions and the teaching staff to provide responses
for everyone to reference.
CD Theories
1) Describe major differences between the theories, what differentiates them form one
another
2) Know the theorists identified with each theory and the theories defining characteristics
3) Reason for having multiple theories and value of using them in work with children
4) Unique aspects of each theory that make it valuable in understanding child development
Research methods/design
1) Different types of research methods, their characteristics, and how/why they are used
2) Different types of research design, how they relate to research methods, and know how
they are applied
3) Important elements of research (i.e., reliability, validity, researcher bias, etc.) and be able
to provide examples of each
Brain & Physical development
1) Understand the components and process of the neural system and its development in
childhood
2) Know how brain development relates to ‘developmentally appropriate practice’ and how
to define DAP
3) What brain regions are responsible for what functions
4) The development of the senses, their relation to learning and brain development.

  5. How teachers cultural awareness and competence effects child’s learning
  6. Concrete ways teachers can account for social diversity in their classroom and create an inclusive environment
  7. Acculturation strategy differences and defining characteristics
  8. How social class effects a child’s learning and development Themes
  9. The intersection of brain structure and environment, how the two affect one another
  10. Develop your understanding of the bio/psycho/social model of development and how it applies to EACH of the above content areas (i.e., family, research, theories, etc.).
  11. Understand the applications to teachers, across all topics. How do the above topics relate to teaching practice? In other words, how do teachers account for culture, brain development, and research in their practice?
