First and foremost, I would like to ask if anyone has ever knew of someone who struggles from depression? Or has anyone ever gone to a time period of their life where they have struggled depression themselves? I would like to talk about depression in our society nowadays especially at this time of pandemic. I want to raise awareness because of everything that is going on and I’m here to talk about how important it is to listen and this topic to be discussed. It can be deliberating and overwhelming for it affects our entire body, mind, and spirit. I believe that this topic is rarely discussed in schools and even at home. Therefore, it is my time to speak. Depression is common mental illness where it affects our ability to think, our ability to function, and our ability to feel. It can also result to more serious problems physically and emotionally. According to World Health Organization, more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression, globally. Research proves that mental stress has the same effect on the brain as physical stress. As we face the risk brought by the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 pandemic, we also deal with the proliferation of cases related to mental health. The sudden change in people’s day-to-day lives brought about by the pandemic come with consequences and additional worries beyond COVID-19 infection. The number of people suffers from depression accumulate during this time of pandemic. Depression is a very complicated mental illness. It occurs not just because of chemical imbalance in our brains, but also by different factors.
Professionals also believe that various factors related to psychology, society, and the environment also affect our well-being. It is often caused by the things we experience and go through on a daily basis to the point that we drown in the amount of things we have to deal with. It feels like to be confined in a place that cannot get out, like the emotions bottled up in our minds. Mixed fear caused by the pandemic and sadness due to inability to study nowadays, lack of daily supply, unemployment, and much more. The symptoms of depression include feeling of low self-worth and increase hopelessness. Unfortunately, depression leads to suicide if it doesn’t have immediate solution. It’s extremely important to consider the symptoms because it could help someone who deals with this kind of situation. During this time when all of us are focused on our physical health, it is important to take care and not forget about our mental health. One should not hesitate to seek for professional help such as medication and therapy if symptoms of depression are observed. Dwelling on our negative thoughts have no help but talking and sharing it to others can ease our feelings of depression. Depression is not a joke; not a trend to make fun of. Thus, it is a thing to be taken seriously.
