Behavioral Intervention for a Wandering Student in a Classroom, Thesis of Business Accounting

A scenario in which a student named Sarah wanders the classroom, disrupting her own learning and that of her classmates. The author proposes an instructional intervention to keep Sarah engaged and minimize her wandering behavior. The document also suggests using technology, specifically Khan Academy, to enhance Sarah's learning. The academic level of Sarah is unknown, and her wandering behavior may be due to various reasons. The document raises questions about the effectiveness of the proposed intervention and the potential impact of technology on student learning.

Task One
Teacher’s College, Western Governor’s University
Part A
From scenario one, the behavior of the student that I would like to
highlight is Sarah. The student Sarah wanders the classroom. Her behavior
affects the learning environment by compromising her own learning by not
being fully engaged in the lesson. The teacher may be discussing, reviewing,
or teaching as Sara wanders the classroom. The learning of the other
students is also disrupted by seeing Sara out of her seat wander the
classroom. The students in the classroom may have their focus distracted
from the teacher to Sarah and like the summary stated, “several students
often do the same thing.” The teacher’s instruction and focus is also
disrupted by Sarah as well as the other students wandering the classroom.
Part B
Sara’s current academic level is unknown. From the information the

Task One Teacher’s College, Western Governor’s University Part A From scenario one, the behavior of the student that I would like to highlight is Sarah. The student Sarah wanders the classroom. Her behavior affects the learning environment by compromising her own learning by not being fully engaged in the lesson. The teacher may be discussing, reviewing, or teaching as Sara wanders the classroom. The learning of the other students is also disrupted by seeing Sara out of her seat wander the classroom. The students in the classroom may have their focus distracted from the teacher to Sarah and like the summary stated, “several students often do the same thing.” The teacher’s instruction and focus is also disrupted by Sarah as well as the other students wandering the classroom. Part B Sara’s current academic level is unknown. From the information the scenario gives the academic and social skills vary for all the students in the classroom. Since the academic and social skill for Sara is unknown Sara may

be out of her seat due to not following directions, boredom, or does not understand that she needs to sit in her seat. Another reason that Sara may be out of her seat could be due to the other commotion in the classroom from Joey who may be talking out of turn or from George as he may be upset or angry from a situation that another student caused. Part C An instructional intervention that I would use to minimize Sara from wandering the classroom would be to deliver instruction in a brisk pace in short sessions. I would set a timer and would finish my instruction before but not after with the goal to keep Sara and the other students from becoming uninterested. I would also like to integrate movement, visual aids, and call backs between myself and the class with the goal of keeping everyone engaged during lesson time. Part D The type of technology that I would introduce to enhance teaching for Sarah is to utilize Khan Academy for the areas that she may need more assistance in or to use to assist in reinforcing a lesson that was taught to the whole class. I would utilize the Khan Academy website for Sara by using a tablet during the subjects or a subject that she would need more assistance in. I think that Khan Academy would be a useful resource to use to reinforce

Walden was engaged in a lesson on the Solar System in the past I would be confident that Walden will be able to work independently on this assignment as well as be enthusiastic to complete the assignment. Part G Bridgett would also use an iPad to utilize the app Science 360. Bridgett must be interested in Science since she attends a Science camp that is why I think she would be engaged in this app. Since Bridgett seeks the attention of the teacher to get approval that she is completing her work correctly I would give her a list of items she is to read, listen to, or watch on the Science 360 app. I would then have her post her answers or project to the Edmodo site that I would have set up for the class to keep her working as I work with the rest of the students to keep the class on track. With a timeframe already agreed upon and discussed with Bridgett I would comment on her posts and she would be able to see the positive feed back about her work. As long as I do as I say I know that Bridgett will be able to work independently and look forward to my positive feedback. Part H
