M.Pd** Staff Pengajar Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat ABSTRAK Menulis adalah salah satu keterampilan yang penting dalam bahasa Inggris yang harus diajarkan oleh seorang guru kepada siswa nya. Menulis merupakan proses untuk mengembangkan ide untuk dijadikan sebuah tulisan yang mengandung makna dan arti,maka dari itu penulisan makalah ini bertujuan untuk membantu guru dalam mengatasi salah satu permasalahan yang ada dalam pengajaran menulis (writing) pada Siswa Menengah Atas (SMA). Selain itu makalah ini juga dimaksudkan untuk menjelaskan aplikasi strategi Point-Illustration-Explanation (PIE) and Author’s Chair Strategy dalam pemahaman sebuah teks report agar menjadi daya tarik tersendiri bagi siswa siswi dalam menulis teks bahasa Inggris. Dalam makalah ini penulis membahas bagaimana mengajarkan menulis (writing) dengan menggabungkan dua strategi yaitu Point-Illustration-Explanation (PIE) And Author’s Chair Strategy. Dalam aplikasinya , guru menggunakan Point- Illustration- Explanation (PIE) Strategi dan Author‟s Chair Strategi dengan cara digabungkan. Dengan di menggunakan strategi ini, siswa dapat meningkatkan pemahaman mereka dalam menulis. Hal ini juga diharapkan untuk tercapainya tujuan pembelajaran menulis pada siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA).

Writing is one of the most important skills which are needed to be attended in the educational world, especially in teaching and learning process of English. Having good writing skill can help every students more active in combining words. They also can express whatever they are thinking or getting about. Furthermore, it will be easy for them to inform many important ideas and knowledge that they have gotten in written form. Nowadays, in every level of language educations, teachers should improve their students writing skill. Teaching writing can reinforce the students ability in grammatical structures, idioms, and vocabularies. When the students write, they are necessarily involved in learning new language. Writing is also the effort to express ideas and the constant use of eyes, hand, and brain. In fact, this is the unique way of learning. Examples of its course , students can pour their thoughts or vent her to write. And writing can be a place for students in addition to telling her friends and her parents. Teacher had to lead the students to study writing seriously. It is because the skill subject can help teacher to identify the level of students comprehension in English. In reality, writing has the most complicated problems to be taught. It is related to any aspect which should be achieved by the students. For example grammar, structure, spelling,
punctuation, vocabulary, idiom, and text organization. Because all of aspects are very necessary later in writing. Besides that, there are some significant factors that students have problem with the writing process. Firstly, a few students are difficult to develop their idea because they did not know for which they intended to write. Then, they did not like to write especially in English. And the students could not think of what they would make to write. Then, the students were lack of vocabulary, ability to use grammar and punctuation appropriately. Indeed, the students could not produce a good text. It can be seen that the students get various difficulties in writing espescially in organizing the ideas. It seems that the teacher just teach which only focused on teacher center and did not appropriate with the subject learn such as, they teach writing but they not give process in writing or the way of writing. Considering the problems above, there are some possible strategies that can be used in preaching writing like Self Writing Strategy, Point, Illustration, Explanation (PIE) Strategy, and Authors Chair Strategy. First, Self Writing strategy is a strategy which students write with only the self in mind. Second, Point-Illustration-Explanation (PIE) Strategy is a writing strategy to remind students about the key parts of a paragraph. Then, Authors Chair Strategy is a time when children can listen to what their classmates are writing about, think about
what they are saying or trying to say, and learn to respond to the writing appropriately. The strategies are effective to use in solving the writing problems that had been faced by the students. The writer limits the problems of writing into; a few students are difficult to develop their idea because they do not know for which they intended to write. Based on the background and limitation of the problem above, the problem of this paper is formulated as follow :”How to teach writing by combining of Point-Illustration-Explanation (PIE) Strategy with Author‟s Chair Strategy at second grade students of Senior High School”. This paper is hopefully useful as the information for the teacher, students, and writer. First, for the teacher, it is hoped that this strategy as an alternative strategy for teacher in teaching writing. And the teacher will know that the combining strategies can be used to teach writing. Next, for the students this strategies can make students to be more active, think more during teaching learning process and motivate students to write and express their ideas in writing easily. Next, for the writer this strategy can be applied at Senior High School.
Writing is one of the essential skills in English which should be comprehended by students. Writing skill is a language skill that needs a really significant attention to be taught by the teacher. Some experts have proposed their ideas about the definitions of writing. Firstly, According to Alamargot and Changuoy (2001:1), writing is a complex task that needs a coordinated implementation of a large set of mental activities. Writers have to clearly delimitate the nature, the goal, and the communicative function of the text. Secondly, Nunan (2003:88), explains that writing is the physical act of committing words or ideas to some medium,whether it is hieroglyphics inked onto parchment or an e-mail message typed into a computer Based on the previous explanations, the writer concludes that writing is a form of communication in human life. It is a unique combination of thought and activity in which everyone can express their feeling in written form. In addition, writing is really effective to use because it will make people easily to talk with the other people by ignoring their sentiment. People can use the more polite languages to deliver their desirable or undesirable felling with someone by using a good order of sentence or paragraph, correct grammar, idiom and spelling. At least, writing is an extraordinary activity that can make a link of life in every periods of humans‟ life. It also the vehicle for
communication and a skill mandated in all aspect of life. Teaching Writing
According to Lindner (1998:65), writing is a solo occupation, but writers still need friends with whom to share the process. Traditionally, they form writing groups to meet regularly and share work in progress, and with younger students start with pairs and work up to groups after they have learned to get work done in pairs. Students or entire writing groups can make appointment for a writing conference with the teacher During drafting or editing sessions. The appointment is important. It assures students that they will get a chance to talk with the teacher and also delays the conference just a little, so they might solve their problems themselves while they wait. Then, Browne (1999:33), defines that children need to learn about writing as well as learning how to write. The process approach involves children in composing, transcribing and reviewing and enables teachers to provide real teaching about writing through conferencing. Drafting , shared writing, scribing and publishing all help children to learn about the process of writing, behave like writers and gain satisfaction from writing. Writing will be one of the many activities that teachers offer children each day, and like any classroom activity it depends on effective classroom management skills for successful outcomes. Furthermore, Caswel and Mabler (2004:7), state that as students work through the stages of the writing process, they must understand its recursive nature. Students can return to a stage after they have left it. Writers struggling with their draft in the writing stage may need to use another prewriting tool to gather more ideas for narrowing or expanding the topic. While revising, students may discover they do not have enough content to effectively use organization or description tools, so they return to the writing or even the prewriting stage. Next, the students have been editing stage while still working in the writing stage. Finally students reach a point in their writing when they are temporarily satisfied and publish the final place for a reader. In conclusion, the teaching writing is a way to process any information and knowledge to the students who will study about the writing. It will help students to be more attractively in writing if the process of teaching is good delivered by teacher. By sharing and applying the teaching process, students will know about the organizations of the paragraph, ideas and any other procedural information in writing.

This strategy helps the students to run their writing in good process of instruction given. Then, James (2010:78), state that by identifying each phase of PIE Strategy naturally, making the process almost as automatic as using your proofreading software. It is explained that when the students try to follow the steps of this strategy, indirectly the students have follow the process automatically. Each steps are worthy for the students, so that they can succeed their writing as what they want to say in written form. Shortly, for all opinions above the writer can conclude that each expert has same opinions about PIE strategy. This strategy benefits the students for automatic process when the students follow each phase on writing. This strategy can train them to do writing well and continuously improve their writing. Author’s Chair Strategy For most students Authors Chair strategy may be new. Teacher should introduce this strategy to the students. In order they can know the authors chair strategy writing. Many information of Authors Chair strategy is needed for students so, there is confusion of this strategy. Well, there are some expert explain about Authors Chair strategy. According to Casey (2000:79) Author‟s Chair is a strategy to showcase the child‟s writing accomplishments. The children can sign up to read their own writing, the writing of a classmate or a trade book. After the reading, the Author‟s answers questions and respond to classmates reactions to the story. It means that author‟s chair is way for the childrenn t share their writing to the others students then they can give some comment or suggestion about author‟s writing. In summary, the writer can conclude based on theories that authors chair strategy gives an opportunity to the students to present their product and to obtain feedback from audience. In this strategy as an instance in learning process to make the students come in learning writing process. So, their writing is will become a good writing. Procedure of Authors Chair Strategy
According to Brunner (2011:49), the procedure of author‟s chair is :
Based on the experts theories about PIE strategy and Authors Chair Strategy, the writer chooses from Disabil (2010) in Point- Illustration- Explanation (PIE) and Brunner (20 11 ) in Author‟s Chair Strategy. The writer can combine the procedures of Point- Illustration- Explanation (PIE) and Authors Chair Strategies as follow:
Preparation is a material that important thing for the teacher in teaching writing process. Before the teaching writing process begins, the teacher should prepare the material to make teaching writing will be succes. There are some preparation that should be done before teaching writing process.
1. Time allocation For the time allocation, the teacher should concern with the time during teaching process. Based on curriculum of senior high school the students learn writing 2 x 45 minutes. In this paper, the writer uses the time in lesson plan such as 10 minutes for pre-teching activities, 60 minutes for whilst-teaching activities, and 20 minutes for post-teaching activities. 2. Choose the topic or material In teaching process, the teacher chooses the topic because that is the important thing in teaching activity. In briefly, the teacher should select the topic or material that is suitable to the students based on background knowledge and the level of achievement or knowledge of the students related to the curriculum. In this paper, the teacher applies the material which refers to curriculum that is report text. 3. Media The interesting and different media support to the smooth process of teaching. The teacher is also able to make the class be fun, enjoy, and comfortable with the media ir self. In this paper, the teacher uses the picture as a media to make the students easily to understand the topic. 4. Prepare the lesson plan All of the teachers need preparation before teaching in classroom activity, so that, the teacher should prepare the lesson plan before the
teacher start to teach, because it is very important thing for the teacher.
A. Teaching Procedures In the teaching procedure of writing process, there are some steps that should be done by the teacher to make the delivering process of knowledge become better. He/She are pre- teaching activities, whilst-teaching activities, and post-teaching activities
1. Pre-teaching activities In this step, teacher does some activities that can raise the students‟ interest in the opening time of study. The activities are: a. Greeting b. Teacher asks the students to pray. c. Checking student attendance list. d. Reviewing e. Brainstorming
