Thanksgiving Day Explained Subject: History Paper 2 Every November, America celebrates a holiday that almost has religious significance. It is called Thanksgiving. This holiday is a significant holiday for us, as it ranks alongside Christmas and Easter in our hearts as well as the nation's. This holiday is rich in tradition, but its origins are from the very beginning of our nation's founding. It was difficult times in the early years for the explorers who set out to explore the American continent. These explorers, now called The Pilgrims faced severe weather conditions, unpredictable relations with natives, disease, and other challenges while they built homes in the wilderness. Their earliest homestead was in the northeast. The winters were brutal, and it was difficult for them to build homes that would keep them warm and provide enough food. This made America a dangerous place for men and women who wanted to raise families. They were treated with joy and celebration whenever they received assistance from the native population. Squanto, a Native American chief, saw the need for these families and made sure his tribe was there to help them. Squanto provided food and advice on how to build shelters that would keep them warm in winter. He also taught them how to fish and how to harvest other sea creatures. This act of friendship is what gave rise to the revered holiday of thanksgiving. It was the Virginia Colony that established the tradition of collective thanksgiving prayers. This tradition is still in
place today. It is more than a day to give thanks for our forefathers' kindnesses and generosity. This day of thanksgiving and reverence is a time to thank God for all the blessings He has bestowed on this nation. Thanksgiving is celebrated with foods that pilgrims brought from the native country. These foods were also the ones they had to learn to harvest, prepare, and feed their families. Turkey was a foul game that was readily available to pilgrims after Squanto taught them how to kill the bird with consistent success. Many of the vegetables that we enjoy on traditional menus have their roots in the early days of the pilgrims. The pilgrims had to learn how to grow, harvest and prepare vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and green beans from the natives. In many ways, the modern holiday retains the spirit of the early celebrations, despite its dominance in football and the coming Christmas holiday. The holiday's meaning has been preserved, despite its commercialization. Americans have much to be grateful for. This holiday celebrates the abundance of the land, the health and prosperity of the economy and the freedom and ability to promote freedom in other cultures. For most Americans, this holiday is a time for family and friends to come together and give thanks to God for their health, blessings, and the privilege of living in the greatest country on Earth. If we work hard, any one of us can succeed. These are truly things to be thankful for.
