THE NOTEBOOK
By: Nick Cassavetes based on Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook.
The Notebook is a story filled with love and bourgeois tragedy, with anguish and a wholesome reunion.
The movie based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks of the same name, and is the most successful
adaptation of his work, according to Box Office Mojo. The story although, pretty simple in plot still gives
the audience the excitement love can bring. There are a few story telling elements that I have found to
be very cliché, and typical of any love story. With its very formulaic sequence and predictable patterns.
The story is about a young couple who’s head over heels for each other but, was separated because of
the girl’s parents. The story is decent and is a great watch, by all means.
Our lead female character Allie Hamilton, a girl with the same name as the aforementioned Ms.
Hamilton, is played by Rachel McAdams, and she spends her summer vacation in Seabrook in the late
1930s. The story opens in a nursing home where Duke (James Garner), a resident, reads a romance story
to Ms. Hamilton, an elderly woman suffering from dementia and memory loss. While spending the night
at a nearby carnival, our female character is spotted by a local worker, who is instantly in love. This is a
common story point in love romances. Noah Calhoun describes the moment he first saw our female lead
as "love at first sight."
This plot point tends to feel rushed and feels unearned, but, one thing that gives this its edge is that our
female lead is with another set of friends that are just as wealthy as her. At first, she bullies him. leaving
him hanging from the Ferris wheel and her stripping his pants off while he hangs; If this happened in real
life the man probably would have been embarrassed and would have stopped right there, but that is not
what happened. it only made our male lead more determined to make her his. And it eventually happened
with a lot of encounters. Those encounters aren’t important to the story, as, any amount of interaction
between them, as long as its sufficient in developing attraction between the two would work. The part
where he approaches her could have been replaced with another scene and it would have worked.
After these two finally ended up with each other. Our Noah chooses to take her to an ancient house where
he shares with her his desire to renovate it. Their attempt at making out ended with their friend catching
them in the act. These days, numerous films, like "Queen of Hearts," "Melancholia," "Truth or Dare," and
many more, depict this. Since they were almost discovered and the ensuing situation would be
embarrassing, this is mainly comic relief. As a result, the buddy calls the police because it's three in the
morning and informs the two lovers that Allie's parents were looking for her. early in the day. Another
cliché that is typically used as comic relief to shock the audience is this one, and it immediately creates an
atmosphere of tension. The narrative then reverts to the well-known cliché of the parents disapproving of
their daughter's potential love partner.
Naturally, this led to the two being split apart. The war kept the two lovers apart for two years; one was a
soldier and the other a nurse. After the war, Noah, who was now a soldier and had recently lost his
comrade Fin to the conflict, returned to Seabrook to restore his dream home. Allie is currently having a
blast with a new wealthy lover she cared for during the war, Lon Hammond, played by James Marden,

After the war, Noah, who was now a soldier and had recently lost his comrade Fin to the conflict, returned to Seabrook to restore his dream home. Allie is currently having a blast with a new wealthy lover she cared for during the war, Lon Hammond, played by James Marden,

who is the heir to a major corporation. After many dates and courting the two eventually decided to marry. This is a big turning point for Allie as all she could think of when Lon proposed is Noah but soon shrugged it off. This is a great section as it is poetic in a way, she might be engaged but her heart belongs to someone else and she just realized it. Meanwhile, Noah has been earnestly rebuilding the abandoned house using Allie and his father’s death as inspiration, he soon finished it and it became a sensation because of its beauty. Newspapers were written and many articles followed along. As Allie gets measured for her dress accompanied by friends and family, she discovers Noah through a newspaper article with the house Noah first brought her to, immediately fainting at the sight. This is funny moment in the movie and is one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie and is a great comic relief. After this Allie, tries to reunite with Noah a few days before her wedding. And after a less than heartwarming reunion the two had hit off. As the two share a meal and some memories on a bat Allie asks why Noa hasn’t wrote to her, which Noah Objects Stating that he has been writing to her every day. The couple eventually shared a kiss and made love until dawn. This shows the love they both had for each other and they eventually let out their feelings. After all of that Allies Mother appears out of nowhere and tells Allie that Lon has followed Allie to Seabrook, because her father told Lon about Noah. Allie’s mother takes her out for a drive, saying how she relates with her daughter’s situation sharing her past. After those set of evets, Noah asks Allie what she’s going to do and Allie confesses and says she does not know either. She drives to Lon and tells him everything. Lon is infuriated by the fact but was calm and says he does not need to make sure his fiancé wants to stay with him, to which Allie replies with who she wants to be with. Meanwhile, in the present-day Duke reads this to Ms. Hamilton and he asks her who Allie chose. The elderly Allie, also known as Ms. Hamilton, remembered her history and briefly shared an intimate moment with the other person. This storyline twist is highly intriguing because the author made sure to incorporate clues about Ms. Hamilton's identity that were yet undetectable to the typical viewer. This is what the movie's opening sequences hint at, and it's done really well. She then relapses, which soon led to her being sedated, but Noah could not bear to see his love in that condition and immediately breaks down. It was later revealed that before Allie slipped into her illness, he scribbled in the book, "Read this to me, and I'll come back to you." A few hours later in the morning after the incident Noah was found unconscious in his bed and was rushed into the hospital: he is then brought into the nursing home’s intensive care ward, Noah now Duke goes into Allies room as she remembers again. The two died peacefully and was later found dead the next morning. A bittersweet ending for the couple that has triumphed over many problems. Next is the Screenplay, there is not much to say about it except that it is very interesting. From the frequent camera pans and blurred backgrounds, the screenplay creates an atmosphere that aids in the overall mood and tone of the film. Some of the frequent cuts from the past through the present were a bit confusing and it ruined the immersion for me but it was placed decently. The lighting in the scenes were appropriate such as in the sex scene. It encapsulated the feel of the house, a dark and cold place but is lit by a light as the center, that symbolizes the warm love Allie and Noah had for each other. Other scenes are great and is visually good at the time of production. The sound was great but could be better. The sounds of their voices had this slight vintage feel that added to the immersion. It really felt like something producers in the 90’s would produce. The film contained little to no special effects except for the drizzles of rain and thunder and it did bring me into the world. It felt like I was there with them but also away from them. the movie is still decent by today’s standards and it is a great watch.
