I completed my work placement at TaxAssist which is an accounting franchise and tax advisory business. TaxAssist specialises in providing accounting, bookkeeping, and tax services to small and medium-sized businesses, sole traders, partnerships, and personal taxpayers. Overall, my experience at TaxAssist was very positive. I found the placement both enjoyable and educational as it gave me the opportunity to see how an accounting firm works in a real business environment. During my time there I learned a lot about daily accounting practices, client interaction, and the importance of accuracy and organisation when dealing with financial information. The staff were very good and supportive also willing to explain tasks which helped me build more confidence and develop new skills. This placement has increased my understanding of the accounting profession and has been a good learning experience. The staff at TaxAssist were extremely nice, talkative, and welcoming. From my first day I felt comfortable and included, as everyone was friendly and approachable. The staff were always willing to have conversations, answer my questions, and explain tasks clearly, which helped me learn more and feel confident in the workplace. Their supportive attitude created a relaxed and professional environment, making it easier for me to settle in and enjoy my placement. My work placement was partly relevant to what I am learning in my FA Accountancy course. Some of the things I learned at my work placement were not covered in class, but it was still good to learn them as it helped me understand how accounting works in a real workplace. There were also some tasks that were very similar to what we do in class, and because of this I was able to complete the work confidently. During my placement at TaxAssist I gained practical accounting knowledge that helped me understand how accounting works in a real business. I developed skills in basic bookkeeping, checking financial information and more. I also learned more about tax-related work, including how information is prepared for self-assessment tax returns and what counts as allowable expenses. Throughout my placement I also got to have a look at accounting softwares they used such as Dext, Xero and FreeAgent. For example, Dext was used to upload, review and organise receipts and invoices making sure they were correctly categorised. Xero was also used to view client accounts, check transactions, and understand how financial data is recorded. The placement improved my confidence by allowing me to apply accounting concepts in a real working environment. Tasks like reviewing financial records and understanding how they contribute to tax returns are a good example of what would be used. This experience made accounting feel more straightforward and increased my confidence in using what I’ve learned outside the classroom.
My accountancy work placement did influence my interest in accounting but it didn’t completely change my mind either way. It helped me understand what the job is actually like, which made accounting feel more realistic. I found some parts interesting especially seeing how accounts and tax work supports their real clients but I also realised that some tasks can be quite repetitive. Overall, it showed me that accounting is a possible career option but not the only one I would consider. The TaxAssist environment was calm, professional and supportive. Even though I was only there once a week the team was friendly and willing to help when I had questions. I also liked having some independence when completing tasks. At some times the office was quiet quiet and the same things were needed done for different people so it felt a bit repetitive at times. The placement made me consider other career paths within finance or business. It showed me how accounting links with other areas such as finance and business management while accounting is still an option, the experience encouraged me to keep an open mind about other roles within the finance and business sector. For future work placements, it would be helpful to have clearer expectations at the start about what tasks students will be doing and what skills they are expected to develop. A short introduction or overview of the business and its processes would also be useful. This would help students feel more confident and understand how their tasks fit into the bigger picture. I would recommend this work placement to other students, especially those interested in accounting or finance. It provides useful insight into a professional accounting environment and helps students understand what the role involves. While it may not suit everyone, it is a good opportunity to gain experience and develop workplace skills. I would recommend this work placement to other students. It was a good way to apply classroom work in a real setting and develop a better understanding. The work placement was well organised and the booklet we had to take to placement had tasks that were clearly linked to the placement and helped structure the experience which was beneficial but also have it explained to me again by TaxAssist staff in case I was unsure when completing the work. One improvement I would say could be made is providing some examples with the tasks in the booklet which would help with confidence and to reflect more deeply on the experience. If I had the chance to do another placement I would like to explore a different area within business, such as in a finance department within a larger company. This would help me gain more understanding of different accounting roles and career options.
