Career management—Unit 1: What is Work?
Skit Title: the distracted employee Characters: alice(manager) Karen(customer)- Tom(employee)
Props: checkout counter Shopping bags Register Cell phone Script: (Tom is behind the checkout counter, scrolling through his phone. Karen, a customer, is standing at the counter with a few items in her hands, looking annoyed.) Karen: (impatiently) Excuse me, are you going to ring these up? Tom: (barely looking up from his phone) Yeah, yeah, just a sec. (Tom continues to scroll, completely absorbed in his phone. Karen taps her foot, clearly frustrated.) Karen: I’ve been waiting here for a few minutes. Can you help me, please? Tom: (sighs and finally puts the phone down) Fine, what do you need? Karen: I just need to pay for these items. I’ve been waiting for a while, and I’m in a bit of a rush. Tom: (carelessly) Okay, whatever. (He starts scanning the items slowly, not making eye contact.) Karen: (shaking her head) This is really unprofessional. (Alice, the manager, enters the scene, noticing the interaction between Tom and Karen.) Alice: (approaching the counter) Is there a problem here? Karen: (frustrated) I’ve been trying to check out, but Tom here seems more interested in his phone than helping me. Alice: (turning to Tom, sternly) Tom, is this true? Are you ignoring customers to use your phone? Tom: (defensively) I was just checking something real quick. It wasn’t a big deal.
Alice: (firmly) It is a big deal. Our priority is the customer, and your behavior is unacceptable. Tom: (shrugs) I didn’t think it mattered. Alice: (seriously) It matters a lot. When you’re on the clock, you need to focus on the job and assist customers promptly. We can’t afford to lose customers because of poor service. Put your phone away and focus on your work. Tom: (reluctantly) Okay, fine. I’ll do better. Alice: (to Karen) I apologize for the inconvenience. Your checkout will be on us today. We value your business and hope you’ll shop with us again. Karen: (softens) Thank you, I appreciate that. (Karen exits the scene, satisfied. Alice turns back to Tom.) Alice: Tom, I need you to understand that this kind of behavior is not acceptable here or in any workplace. If it happens again, there will be consequences. Tom: (nodding) Understood. *(Alice walks away as Tom sighs and puts his phone in his pocket, looking more attentive now.) Write a short paragraph explaining why the employee behavior in your skit is unacceptable: The skit portrays the unacceptable behavior of an employee, Tom, who prioritizes using his personal cell phone over assisting a customer. This behavior is inappropriate because it demonstrates a lack of commitment, poor communication, and unprofessionalism in the workplace. In any job, especially in customer service, employees are expected to be attentive, punctual, and dedicated to performing their duties to the best of their ability. Ignoring customers in favor of personal distractions not only reflects poorly on the employee but also on the business as a whole, potentially leading to loss of customers and revenue. Employers value professionalism and expect employees to be fully engaged during work hours, which is why Tom’s behavior needed to be addressed and corrected.
