  1. CAE writing samples mark these CAE writing samples as if you were an examiner. Focus on the 4 categories that we looked at, giving each a score from 1 to 5

8 Discuss essays Extract useful/recyclable information from them, especially focussing on structures and collocations Confusing vocab gaze, peer, stare / glance, glimpse

  1. Have a look at this website for useful language. NB there is A LOT here for now, focus specifically on the sections which say they are useful for essays (near the bottom)
  2. Write your essay, bearing everything that we have discussed in mind. Remember to think as if you were the examiner. You should write between 220 260 words. You can either choose the essay question you analysed or the following one:

Effects of globalisation: ● the dominance of the western music/film industry. ● the loss of national identity. ● the undermining of values of a local culture. Write an essay discussing TWO of the effects listed in your notes. You should explain which effect is more important, giving reasons in support of your answer.

  1. Review some of the language you highlighted from the article. Choose some of the expressions/phrasal verbs etc. and make at least 5 questions for your fellow classmates. E.g. What’s the best way to gain confidence in a new job?
  2. Idioms: “Short” list and Long list you also have the Russian translation if you need it… ; ) There is also this website which categorises idioms by theme but be warned, there are a LOT! For now, focus on the short list and see how many you know and how many are new for you.
