Present Simple / Present Continuous
We use the Present Simple to talk about facts and actions that we do regularly.
We go to the movies once a month.
David doesn’t eat pizza every day.
We use the Present Continuous to talk about something that is happening at the moment.
I’m writing a letter to my friend at the moment.
They aren’t painting right now.
Present Simple / Present Continuous
1. Start the lesson by inviting a student to say a sentence in the Present Simple. For example:
I bake bread.
Have another student tell the class what the first student said, but change the form of the verb to the
Present Continuous. For example:
Sarah is baking bread.
Repeat the steps above, but begin with the Present Continuous.
2. Write sentences in both the Present Simple and Present Continuous on the board. Include an
appropriate time expression in each sentence. Have the students identify which tense is used in each
sentence.
3. Have students come to the board and underline the time expressions that helped them identify the
tense.
4. You might want to review all the forms of the Present Simple and Present Continuous, as explained in
Situations 1 and 2.
5. Print out the worksheet and give a copy to each student.
6. Exercise A is a text. You can:
a. use the text to present the grammar points above by having the students highlight examples of the
structures in the text.
b. review the grammar points above and use the text to show both form and function.
c. review the grammar points and print the text with the grammar-related words deleted, using it as a
cloze.
7. Have the students do exercises B and C.
