PART 2: CHARACTERS

  1. Definition of characters

-Elements that produce and suffer the action of a story.

-Humanized, with personality, emotions, consistency and motivations.

-“Criminals will do bad things and heroes will do good things”.

-Characteristics of characters are deduced by the viewer with their actions, not directly told.

-All characters are there because of a reason.

Protagonist

-Main character: Rick Deckard.

-”The one who struggles to solve something, discover a truth and repair natural harmony”.

-He is a Blade Runner; a policeman whose role is to “retire” replicants, which are dangerous robots.

-The movie develops around him.

-Round and dynamic.

Antagonist

-“A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something”.

-Replicants: Roy, Pris, Leon and Zhora.

-Nemesis: Opposes the protagonist, but we need both in order to understand the story. Roy Batty. He is also a round and dynamic character, while the rest of the replicants are flat and static.

Others:

-Foil character/ sidekick: Partner of the protagonist.

-Deuteragonist: Secondary character, right behind the protagonist.

-Helper/ mentor: Helps the protagonist.

There are no foil characters, deuteragonists, or helpers in this movie.

Archeotypes

  • “The hero”: Rick Deckard.
  • “The damsel”: Rachael.
  • “The creator”: Eldon Tyrell.
  • “The evil enemy”: Roy Batty.
  • “The freak”: J. F. Sebastian.

Point of view:

● 1st Person ○ 1st Person Protagonist ○ Witness Character ● 3rd Person ○ 3rd Omniscient ○ 3rd Limited ○ 3rd Objective : The story is described, there is total objectivity, as we see what the characters do but not what they feel.

PART 4: THEME

PART 5: SETTING

Setting

-The story takes place in “the future”: 2019.

-Los Angeles. Futuristic environment.

-Flying cars. Globalized world. People from many races.
