“Blasted”, by Sarah Kane
The theatre play “Blasted”, by Sarah Kane, is a good play. However, I have disliked it
because of many things.
Firstly, the plot talks about past time pain and suffering. The story is situated in a hotel
room. Outside of the room, there is a great conflict because there are a large number of
soldiers.
The author has perfectly known how to involve us in that context and in that situation.
She describes in detail all the situations which happen outside the hotel. She even tells
us how a soldier eats the characters eyes and then he kills himself. So, she talks about
suicide too.
In my opinion, she has described the situation with a great detail in order to make us
enjoy more. Because of that, while we are reading, we feel we are there, in the hotel,
hearing the bombs and people shouting.
Nevertheless, I have particularly disliked the play because of the presence of so many
horrible things. One example of those things is when the soldier eats the eyes of one of
the characters. Another example of that is when Ian finds the baby’s corpse and eats it.
Probably, the author uses these examples to explain better how the situation was.
However, it is quite disagreeable.
Secondly, and talking about the vocabulary used by Kane during the whole play, the
words and expressions which are used by her are not excessively difficult to understand,
although I have had some problems with some specific words. However, I think that
thanks to that, I have improved my English.
Furthermore, I agree with the fact that Sarah Kane has written a really great theatre
play, with an interesting plot, although I have disliked because of the examples
mentioned before.
To sum up, it seems to me that if you love to read stories which tell things that help you
to understand better real situations that happen nowadays in our society, you have to
read “Blasted”, although there are several unpleasant examples which are not nice to
read.
