Pre-task
Start by doing the self-correcting exercises which you can find in CA1 Learning resources.
As you are working through the exercises, take note of any new language you learn. If this is
the first time studying English with us, we recommend that you consult the
Materials_User_Guide
Download Materials_User_Guide.
When you have finished, share one thing that you have learnt from these resources (e.g.
vocabulary, expressions or grammar) in the I've learnt something today discussion.
Task 1: Make a video giving advice
In this task, you must record a video (not an audio) welcoming new students to the
UOC and giving them advice.
Mentors Wanted
We need your help! As a UOC student, you understand the ups and downs of
studying online and your experience has provided you with wisdom about this
campus. We would like you to share this wisdom with new students at the UOC. How
will you welcome them? What tips can you share to make their UOC experience a
great one? How do you deal with matters like tech trouble, motivation, organising your
schedule, communication, your health and well-being, and study-life balance?
Record a video contribution of 1 - 2 minutes, and follow these steps:
1. Introduce yourself;
2. Give the new students some tips to help them succeed at the UOC, and say how these
strategies have helped you;
3. End by wishing the new students well with their studies
Record or upload your video to CA1 Good advice. Please click here

Links to an external site. for instructions on how to do this. Remember: Your recording should be spontaneous and natural. Speak to the camera as if you were speaking directly to the students you are welcoming. If you do not make eye contact, or if your pronunciation or intonation is unnatural (e.g., if you are reading from a script), your mark will be lowered. For more information, see CA1 Making effective videos. Originality of your work You may prepare some notes but you must use your own words and you must not read directly from a prepared script, from the Internet or a book as that is considered to be plagiarism. For more information, see the section on plagiarism in the Course Plan. Assessment criteria Please see Marking_Criteria_Individual_speaking.pdf Download Marking_Criteria_Individual_speaking.pdf.

Task 2: Q & A

Watch your classmates’ videos in CA1 Good advice. Post questions to at least two of them either as a video or as an audio file. You could ask questions about the content of their talks or ask them to clarify something you didn’t understand. And make sure to reply to classmates that have asked you questions!

Post-task: Reflect on: Bad advice

Reflect on the point below and post your written response to the CA1 Bad advice: What is one bad piece of advice you have received about any area of your life? Why do you think it would be unrealistic or unwise for you to follow that advice? Read your classmates’ posts and respond to one (or more) of them, relating their bad advice to your own situation. Consider whether it would be good or bad for you to follow the advice that is bad for them. Feel free to continue responding to one another in a dialogue!

CA1 Reading activity

To do the reading comprehension exercise, go to CA1 Reading activity. You will read two texts. For each text you will do a multiple-choice exercise and a vocabulary exercise.
