Class enemy”, by Nigel Williams
“Class enemy”, by Nigel Williams, is the second play I have read, and I can say that I
have disliked it more than the previous one, although I liked.
First of all, the language used in the play is very difficult to understand. There are lots
of expressions and words which are really difficult for our knowledge and level. The
characters use an amount of colloquial expressions, which don't make the
comprehension of the text easier. Probably, if I had a higher level in my English
knowledge, I could understand better the play, without any problems of comprehension.
Maybe the author pretends to reflect the situation explained during the play with those
expressions. The characters are young people, and thanks to their language, we can be
closer to them, although it is not easy to understand what they are saying.
However, apart from this, I think that the plot is quite good and interesting. If the
language were easier, we would enjoy the play more, because the plot is very easy.
Talking about the different behaviours of each character, the author presents us a normal
situation which we have nowadays in our society: a group of young people that don’t
have respect for anything.
The group acts like if they were a society: one of them has the role of the leader and
imposes his wishes and conveniences to the other people of the group.
All of them have a particular characteristic in their behaviours which makes them
special. One example of what I have said is the sense of leadership which Iron has. In
addition to this, Snatch is a boy who is the clever of the group. I can conclude saying
that, due to the fact that everyone has one important characteristic, it is a group which is
very balanced.
Furthermore, the experiences told by all of them make possible that we are closer to
them, because they talk about sex or hobbies, for example. So, these topics are very
common nowadays.
Finally, I don't particularly recommend that play because due to the language, it is quite
difficult to understand a lot of things. However, if you have a good level of English, you
will not have any problem when you decide to read it.
