“The Missed Flight”
Last year, Daniel had planned to travel to Paris for an international conference. He booked
his flight months in advance, reserved a small hotel near the Eiffel Tower, and even prepared
his presentation carefully. On the morning of his departure, everything went wrong.
Daniel set his alarm for 6:00 a.m., but he was so tired the night before that he accidentally
turned it off instead of pressing snooze. When he finally woke up, it was already 7:30. His
flight was scheduled for 9:00, and the airport was an hour away. He rushed out of bed,
grabbed his suitcase, and called a taxi. The driver, however, got stuck in heavy traffic. By
the time Daniel reached the airport, the boarding gate had already closed. He begged the
airline staff to let him in, but the plane was gone. They offered him another flight later that
evening, but it was much more expensive. He didn’t have enough money in his account to
pay for it, so he had to cancel the whole trip.
Daniel felt devastated. If he had caught his flight, he would have attended the conference,
met international experts, and perhaps even impressed someone who could offer him a better
job. Instead, he went back home and spent the day regretting his mistakes. Later, while
scrolling through social media, he saw pictures from the conference: smiling people,
delicious French food, and exciting cultural tours. He realized how many opportunities he
had missed. He told himself, “If I had been more careful the night before, I would have
double-checked my alarm. If I had done that, none of this would have happened.”
Since then, Daniel has changed some habits. Now, whenever he has an important event, he
sets two alarms on two different devices. He also prepares his bag the night before and asks
a friend to call him early in the morning. He knows he cannot change the past, but he believes
he can change the future.
Daniel sometimes imagines what life would be like if he had actually gone to Paris. Maybe
he would be working abroad now. Maybe he would have made new friends from different
countries. He will never know. But one thing is certain: if he had managed his time better, he
wouldn’t have lost such a valuable chance.
