USE: To describe something that is true
CONSTRUCTION: If+ S+ V. Present
If you drink sangria at the beach, you get a headache.
If you don’t bring your WB, you get a negative mark.
First conditional: to say something is possible in the present or the
future
CONSTRUCTIOIN: If+ S+ v. present
S+ Will /won’t+ comp
If I take the 3:00 PM train, I will arrive home early.
If I don’t pass the exam I might get grounded
second conditional
USE: hypothetical or unreal situations in present or future.
CONSTRUCTION: If+ S+ V. past simple.
S+ Would / could+ inf + comp
If I won the lottery, I would travel a lot
If I were you, I would buy new sneakers.
If I could be a model if you were pretty.
Would you love me if I were sick?
Third conditional
CONSTRUCTIONS: If + S+ Past perfect (HAD+ 3rd column),
S +would have+ past participle
If you had invited me to the trip, she would have come.
If I had answered all the questions, I would have passed the
exam.
If I hadn’t been sick, I would have gone to your party?
Would you have forgiven your boyfriend if she had cheated on
you?
