Nevertheless / However:
It was very difficult. Nevertheless / however, we did it.
Although + clause (subject + verb):
Although I dropped the cup, it didn’t break.
Though I didn’t feel well, I went to work. (Informal)
Even though I didn’t understand a word, I kept smiling. (emphatic)
In spite of / Despite + gerund:
In spite of being cold, I went to the beach.
In spite of / Despite + (possessive adjective) noun or pronoun:
In spite of / Despite the cold weather, he didn’t take the coat.
In spite of / Despite his advanced age, he danced until midnight.
In spite of / Despite that, he didn’t take the coat.
On the other hand / But / Whereas / While
Luke is a vegetarian. On the other hand, his friends eat meat.
I’m tall, but my sister is short.
Whereas I’m tall, my sister is short. / While I’m tall, my sister is short.
A.A. REPHRASE THE SENTENCES BEGINNING WITH THE WORDS IN BRACKETS.
