Writing task: a story. José García Ávila
Chillmere is a village in a valley where the sun only shines for two hours each day, leaving the rest
of the time dark and cold. The village, though green and filled with trees, is difficult to navigate due
to the constant humidity, which makes the paths soft and muddy. The villagers can only go outside
during the brief daylight hours, as it becomes too dangerous to find their way home after it gets dark.
One day, Kate, the mayoress of Chillmere, is told by a group of children that soldiers from the
kingdom of Chillfrost have warned them to leave the mountain because it will soon be claimed by
the kingdom. Alarmed, Kate orders everyone to stay inside while she figures out what to do.
A week later, Kate embarks on a difficult journey to Chillfrost, which requires crossing twenty
mountains. As the sun only shines on the mountaintops, she must carefully navigate from peak to
peak to avoid losing daylight. When she finally reaches Chillfrost, soldiers allow her to pass and she
makes her way to the palace, where people notice that Kate and the king Erik of Chillfrost look very
similar.
Kate and King Erik stand facing each other, and he leads her to a palace terrace where they begin to
speak. Kate reveals that Chillmere is the only village not controlled by Chillfrost because she is
Erik's sister and protected the village when he took the throne. After ten years of silence, Erik no
longer sees a reason not to conquer Chillmere. Kate knows she could become queen of Chillfrost by
killing Erik, guaranteeing the protection of its people. As she prepares to strike, Erik stops her,
surprising her with a different, unexpected request.
By her surprise, Erik didnt want to conquer Chillmere, but he knew that probaly Kate wouldn’t have
gone to talk to him if it had not been such an important question. The real problem of Erik was that
the other trhree kingdoms of the country wanted to conquer Chillfrost and he didn’t have a strong
army enough to defend the kingdom and he needed the help of her sister and her village knowing
that as they live in a diffult conditions place they could have skills to help him to defend the
kingdom. Kate accept to help her brother only if once they had defend Chillfrost, Erik leaves free all
the conquered villages as he did with Chillmere.
