Dorian Gray: for art's sake

Outline

Introduction

In this essay, I am going to show the relation between the good looks of Dorian and his character, furthermore, we will see up to what extent this is faithful to the ideas behind On the Beautiful and the Sublime, by Immanuel Kant. I am going to say some words about art's experience: the sublime (related to horror and Dorian's behaviour) and the beautiful (related to Dorian's appearance).

Paragraph 2

Firstly, we know that Dorian is a "young man of extraordinary personal beauty" (TPODG, 5). The reader is presented a boy whose good-looking semblance amazes people; a person whose mind is naive and susceptible to external influence. This two features of the protagonist are going to remain throughout the whole novel. However, when we read The Picture of Dorian Gray our feelings as readers towards the character change from sympathy to dislike: this is due to the fact that in the beginning he is a nice boy whereas in a determinate moment he becomes a supreme egoist and a deceiver.

Paragraph 3

Secondly, it is interesting to compare the features (physical and psychological) of Dorian Gray to the precepts in On the Beautiful and the Sublime. According to Kant, the sensations of pleasure or displeasure do not only depend on the inclinations and sensibility of each individual, but they also depend on a special feeling, shared by all humans, which can be classified into two branches: the beautiful and the sublime. In Kant's essay, the characteristics of Gray's appearance (e. g. blond hair or femininity) are related to the beautiful. In this observation, we are not taking into account moral or immoral deeds, just the feelings that the beautiful or the sublime awaken.
