OVER 30% OF LANGUAGES IN THE WORLD WILL DISAPPEAR BEFORE
2100
Many languages in the world are in danger of disappearing and the international
community is not doing enough to save them. Nowadays, local languages are not used
as much as before, families are not teaching their descendants these languages. Due to
this they are becoming dead languages. In this report we will raise awareness by
describing the causes, explain the importance and suggesting solutions to this cause.
CAUSES
In the world, there are many different languages, however, there are some that are not as
popular as other. In past centuries each country as chosen one language that either
represents the country, is the one that is spoken by more people or simply is the one that
has been in that country the longest time. But, even if it is not the official language there
are always many languages that are linked to a smaller group of people from the same
country. The consequence that these languages suffer is that they are spoken by a
reduced amount of people, and the ones that speak it are not teaching it to others to
avoid its disappearance.
IMPORTANCE
The preservation of these languages is vital to maintain part of the culture of small
communities around the world. The disappearance of them would mean they lose part of
their identity, that once lost it will be almost impossible to bring back. The language
that their ancestors used to use would be gone, and that would end special traditions and
their meaning. What would be the point of speaking a global language if you are not
even capable of speaking your own language. That is not the real you, you would have
lost all your roots. In addition, there is nothing worst than not having something to go
back to when you are at your lowest.
SUGGESTIONS
There are plenty of things that can be done. But, in order to succeed in them, we need
world leaders to realise the magnitude of this issue. The international community is not
doing enough, however, these are some things that can be done. Firstly, the state should
introduce these languages as a subject in those places that are in danger of losing a
language. This way the children will be able to speak it, and the language could be used
again in that community. Secondly, investing money in those languages and giving the
opportunities for people from other places to learn those languages too. This can be
done by creating language schools and bringing native teachers to work there.
Moreover, families can start by maintaining those languages between the family, and at
least speak it at home.
To conclude, with everything said above it has been stated the importance of taking care
of those languages that are in danger of disappearing. Some points have been given on
how this issue can be reduced. Leading to the conservation of cultural and identity
aspects, and having the chance to keep up with the traditions. If these recommendations
are followed and world leaders act on it, most of the languages that are in danger of
disappearing will be saved.
