MODAL VERBS

A modal verb is a type of helping verb that supports a main verb to express COMMUNICATIVE INTENTIONS like ability, permission, possibility, necessity, or obligation. Common modal verbs include can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would. Unlike regular verbs, modals don't change form for different subjects and are followed by the base form of a verb. Must Have to Should May / Can / ________ Meaning Expresses strong obligation, necessity, or a rule. Often from the speaker or authority. Expresses necessity or obligation too, but usually because of external rules, laws, or circumstances. Who decides? Obligation comes from the speaker (internal authority) Obligation comes from outside (external authority or situation). Example “You must wear a helmet. It’s too dangerous without one.” (speaker’s strong opinion) “You have to wear a helmet. It’s the law.” (external rule) Formality More formal, stronger More neutral, everyday use. Negatives Must not = prohibition (something is not allowed). Don’t have to = lack of necessity (not required). Example (negative) “You must not cheat in the game.” (forbidden) “You don’t have to play if you don’t want to.” (optional) Structure +
