Introduction to English Grammar by R. Huddleston and G. K. Pullum.
Activity
For each of the following adjectives, decide whether it can be used in
attributive function, in predicative function, or in both. Give examples of all
the cases.
Example:
sleepy
They retired to a little sleepy village in the West of Yorkshire.
(attributive)
He had begun to feel sleepy. (predicative)
1. Faithful
The faithful dog accompanies its owner a lifetime (attributive).
I will stay with my boyfriend if he is faithful to me (predicative).
2. Jealous
The jealous sister left the party (attributive).
He was jealous of the neighbor's car (predicative).
3. Glamorous
The glamorous actress walked down for the red carpet (attributive).
Beyoncé is a very glamorous artist (predicative)
4. afraid
- The afraid boy hid in his room (attributive).
- She was afraid to the dark (predicative).

Activity

For each of the following adjectives, decide whether it can be used in attributive function, in predicative function, or in both. Give examples of all the cases.

1. Faithful
