When do we use it?

  • To talk about habits and routines “I study English on Mondays and Thursdays”. “I sometimes go to the cinema”. “I never win at bingo”.
  • Universal truths “Water boils at 100ºC”. “Water freezes at 0ºC”.

Affirmative form

+He +She + we commonly add – s to the verb +It ( rd person) Verb play : “She always plays football”. Verb wait : “Sarah waits for me every day”.

Affirmative form

BUT…

+If the verb finishes in – ss, - sh,–ch, - x, or we add – es (only in 3 rd person). Verb watch : David watches Netflix once a week. Verb finish : She finishes her homework before I leave home. Verb kiss : My dog kisses me all the time.

Some irregular verbs:

Do: in 3

rd

person would be DOES.

Go: in 3

rd

person would be GOES.

Have: in 3

rd

person would be HAS.

Negative form

+I

+You + do not (don’t) + verb in infinitive +We +They Verb watch : “I don’t watch TV on Saturday”. Verb try : “Rachel and Steph don’t try to learn English”

Interrogative form

+Do + I/you/we/they + verb in infinitive …? +Does + he/she/it + verb in infinitive …? Do you study or work? Does Mary have a pet? Do Marcus and Anna go to the cinema on Sunday? Does she do judo on Wednesday?

Short answers

  • Yes , I/you/we/they do.
  • No , I/you/we/they don’t.
  • Yes , he/she/it does.
  • No , he/she/it doesn’t.
  • Does Mary go to the cinema on Sunday?
  • Yes, she does / No, she doesn’t.
