Hello everyone, my name is Paola Tajonar and in this video I’ll give you the best tips for every section on how to get a higher score on your upcoming IELTS Certification exam, so without further ado, let’s get into the video!
Let’s start with the reading portion of the exam what's the reading exam format? well you get 40 questions and 60 minutes to complete it, in IELTS academic you get three longer passages and IELTS general training five shorter passages. In the academic, you need to answer 30 questions in order to get a band seven and in general training, topics are a bit simpler but you'll be expected to answer the 34 questions in order to get a band 7.
Starting with Tip #1 Manage your time wisely while answering
Expect to be short on time in IELTS reading, basically you have a lot to read and then looking for the questions takes a lot of time, so time management is important, usually the first passage is the easiest and the last one is the most difficult. So the instructions tell you to spend 20 minutes on each section but you should finish the first one in about 15 minutes, 20 for the second one and 25 for the third one but ideally you need to go through the questions even more quickly, basically when you find a question and you don't know what the answer is, don't spend too much time on this question just mark it to review it later and move on, once you finish all the questions if you have time, then go back and look for answers to those questions. If you attempt to answer all the questions at once, you'll be marking your answers on the question sheets first but then you're not going to get extra time to transfer your answers afterwards, you must finish everything in 60 minutes so what I recommend you is answer a set of questions first and then transfer the answers, then the next set of questions, transfer the answers and so on.
Tip #2 Skimming and Scanning
You should be able to skim through the passages to do well in IELTS. Skimming is reading a passage to get the general idea of the content before tackling the questions. This does not mean to try to understand the passage, it’s just a chance to get the topic and layout, while doing so, you should underline any key words you see.
Tip #3 Practice doing reading tests
This is the best way to use your time before the exam, You’ll learn how to take the test before taking the real test. You’ll know where your strengths and weaknesses are. You’ll also know what to do for each task, and how to answer each type of question. This way you’ll know how to best divide your time and won’t stress too much about working against the clock. Practice does make perfect!
Now with the writing portion of the exam.. It has two tasks and you have 60 minutes to answer them.
For Task 1, you must provide at least a 150 word answer to describe, summarise or explain some visual information such as graphs, tables, charts or diagrams, using your own words.
On the other hand, Task 2 requires you to “respond to a point of view or argument or problem” considering the relevant issues.
Tip #1 Understand the question
You must understand the question before you attempt to answer it. This way, you’ll know exactly what the examiner is looking for. One of the biggest mistakes most people make is not answering the question fully, which stops them from getting a score higher than a Band
To analyse the question, you must first identify the question type, then identify the keywords in the question and finally identify the instructions words. This will help you understand exactly what the examiner wants you to do with the question.
Tip #2 Plan your answer
Planning helps you organise your ideas and structure your essay before you write it, saving you time and helping you come up with a clear and coherent essay.
Tip #3 Try using alternate words for “very”
This word is used too frequently, even by native speakers but if you avoid it your writing, it will immediately look stronger and more formal and that's what you need in IELTS essays, you can solve this problem by using stronger adjectives, for example, instead of saying “ a very important decision” say a “crucial decision”, “a very big house” try using “a massive or an enormous house”.
Tip #4 Avoid starting your sentences with “There is or it is”
This structure is too simple and lacks style so try to avoid it. Here is an example, “There are two possible solutions for the government to choose from.” you can rephrase the sentence and say “The government should choose between two possible solutions.”
Moving on to the listening portion ,
The listening test lasts approximately 30 minutes and the test format consists of 4 sections and a total of 40 questions and questions get harder as you progress through the test
Tip #1 Word types
Skip over the questions and decide which type of word fits in each gap. Is it a noun, verb, adverb or adjective? Write 'N' for noun, 'V' for verb and so on. This will help you to focus on the specific word forms while listening.
So I hope this tips can help you with your IELTS preparation for your upcoming exam and thank you for watching. Good luck!
