Latin Historiography gained momentum in the 4th^ century AD, particularly with the production of abridged compilations called breviaria. The authors of two of these, Eutro- pius and Festus, probably became governors of Asia straight after their work for the court of Valens at the magisterium memoriae. This paper analyses a couple of inscriptions docu- menting their actions in the provincial capital, Ephesus, and seeks to establish a connection between the maintenance of civic life in Late Antiquity, the role of imperial administrators and the production of compendia for the Valentinian dynasty. Clásico. A mitad de camino entre el final del Imperio Romano y el comien-

zo de lo que se ha venido a llamar Antigüedad Tardía, hablamos de un pe-

riodo de cambio y transformación que debe mirar tanto a las raíces greco-romanas

sobre las que se fundamenta como al asentamiento del nuevo panorama político

y religioso surgido a partir del comienzo de la Tetrarquía. El sistema puesto en

marcha por Diocleciano conllevará reformas de organización imperial que marcan

el camino de la administración romana posterior pero también desembocará en

la progresiva aceptación del Cristianismo desde Constantino hasta la adopción

oficial de Teodosio en Tesalónica. Se trata de una época de múltiples acontecimien-

tos, movimientos dinásticos y desarrollos variados que alumbraron un interesante

renacer de materiales escritos en griego y latín que sobreviven en cantidades a las

que los estudiosos de la Antigüedad no están acostumbrados. Después de un siglo

III, particularmente a partir del 250 y, aún más, en de la parte occidental del Im-

perio, que no abunda en grandes autores y nuevas narrativas literarias, la nómina

y volumen de obras conservadas a partir del año 300 es amplísima. Este contraste
