On February 10, 1675, the settlement of Lancaster, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was
attacked by Native Americans. The Native Americans burned down houses and opened fire on
the British settlers, killing several of them.
Mary Rowlandson’s captivity narrative describes her experience as a captive of the Native
Americans. Her diary accounts for her capture to her return. Her capture is recounted in twenty
"removes". Rowlandson observes her experience in relation to God and the bible, she makes
continual references to the bible throughout her narrative to support her actions. She also wrote
how she tried to acknowledge the Sabbath day while captive. Rowlandson’s behaviour, also
reflects the role of women.
The Third Remove is about the death and burial of Rowlandson’s youngest daughter. God has
put the child out of her misery.
In the final pages of her narrative, Rowlandson summarizes the situation of the past several
months.
While a prisoner, Mary Rowlandson travelled from Lancaster to Menamaset then north to
Northfield and across the Connecticut river to meet with King Philip. ext she traveled up into
southwestern New Hampshire, south to Menamaset, and north to Mount Wachusett.
these fragments give a view of religion and the Bible from the point of view of women.
