Clara Alba Martí^1 (^1) Institut Puig de la Creu ABSTRACT An experiment has been made with the purpose of investigating if the following drug compounds are suitable for the cure of cancer: Cicloflavin A and Zanton L. Moreover, we have done an analysis of the mitotic index in order to test the efficiency of the drug compounds. As a result, differences have been exposed on the effectiveness of the treatments. The results have allowed us to conclude that there are considerable changes in the efficiency of the different treatments. INTRODUCTION Mitosis is a process of nucleus division, in which one cell divides into two genetically identical daughter cells. It is a fundamental process for growth, development, and repair in multicellular organisms. During mitosis, the DNA in the parent cell replicates, and then the replicated chromosomes are evenly distributed into the two daughter cells, ensuring that each new cell receives a complete set of genetic information. Cancer is the development of abnormal cells which divide uncontrollably throughout a particular zone of the organism, having the ability to infiltrate through the bloodstream and being able to spread to other parts of the body. When mitosis occurs infinitely, produces uncontrolled cell division, this mass of cells replicate itself to make new cells that are also out of control. These ones are cancerous cells. They can form tumours that damage the surrounding tissues. The aim of this scientific research is to investigate whether cancer can be treated by using two drug compounds (Cicloflavin A and Zanton L) that could reduce the mitotic index, which is a proportion between the cells in interphase and the ones in the process of nucleus cell division (mitosis). For these reasons, we think that maybe these drug compounds could be used as a treatment for reducing the mitotic index and therefore as a possible cure for cancer. Picture explaining cancer, Oncology department, Pantai Hospital, Kuala Lumpur MATERIAL AND METHODS Two mice with cancer disease have been taken to verify our initial goal. They have been subjected to an experiment done with the drug compounds Cicloflavin A and Zanton L. The procedure for carrying out the experiment has several parts: firstly, a sample with a bunch of tumoral cells from the mice has been extracted and analysed with the microscope. Secondly, one of them has been provided with 10 U of Cicloflavin A in a period of time of one month. We have done the same with the other mouse, but with a slight variation on the drug compound, we have added the compound Zanton L. Lastly, the biopsy has been made again at the same tumoral area as in the pre- test and also observed through the microscope. In both treatments, almost all the variables have been the same: temperature (25ºC), diet, dose (10U) and time (one month). The only
variable that has been changed is the medication; in treatment A has only been Cicloflavin A and in treatment B the combination of Cicloflavin A and Zanton L. For calculating the mitotic index of all the samples we have taken, we have made a division of the sample in two fields to make the recount of the cells easier. Once all the mitotic cells and the interphase cells have been counted, we calculate the mitotic index by dividing the number of mitotic cells for the cells of the sample. The mitotic index must be calculated not only on the pre-test samples but also on the post-test samples of the two mice. Cells from the pre-test biopsy, individual AX RESULTS In both cases we have observed a decrease on the mitotic index of the mice. On the treatment A, the one with only Cicloflavin A, with a dose of 10U and a period of one month, had a mitotic initial index of 22,45%. After the treatment, its mitotic index is 17,8%, which shows us that has been reduced. So it has decreased the mouse with treatment B, Cicloflavin A combined with Zanton L, using the same dose and also the same period of time. It had a pre-test with an index of the 23% and the post-test with an 8,33%. As we can see in the graphic, the mitotic index in the pre-test is quite similar on both treatments, whereas in the post-test there is a huge difference between the two treatments. The results of the experiment show us that the mitotic index decreases on both treatments, but it decreases drastically in treatment B. CONCLUSIONS Our results express that both treatments could be a solution for the cure of cancer. Analysing the results, we have concluded that Cicloflavin A decreases the mitotic index slowly whereas this same drug compound combined with Zantol makes the treatment more efficient. Furthermore, we would like to highlight that although these drug compounds seem to produce good results, they need a huge dose to work on the cure of the specific cancer. The hypothesis we have set out at the beginning of this research is true, the drug compounds can be used as a treatment for reducing the mitotic index and therefore as a possible cure of cancer. We have confirmed it by paying attention to the fluctuations of the mitotic index before and after applying the treatment. Looking forward to doing future experiments, it would be great to have a few replicas or copies of the two treatments to make sure the results are not just random results.
