1. Cornish Pasties I'm having a fantastic time here in the UK and I thought I'd write (1) ........ tell you about somthing I've eaten which I loved! As you know, I'm in a place called Cornwall, (2) ........ is in the south west. They have something called a Cornish Pasty. It looks like a parcel made of pastry and the pastry holds together a mixture of meat and vegetables. Cornish pasties have (3) ........ interesting history. In the past, they were the basic meal for Cornish miners who worked underground digging for tin. After a hard morning's work the miners would sit down to eat (4) ........ lunch. The design of the pasty meant they could eat the meat and vegetables before throwing away the dirty pastry. I don't know if it's true and (6) ........ seems a shame that they couldn't eat all of it! You can get Cornish pasties anywhere in the UK but I've been told the best ones are in Cornwall. 2. Coldplay’s first hit «Yellow» is a song (1) ____________ English alternative rock band Coldplay. The band wrote the song and co-produced it (2) ____________ British record producer Ken Nelson. It was for their first album Parachutes. The song’s lyrics are a reference to band vocalist Chris Martin’s unreturned love. The song was released (3) ____________ the world in June 2000. It was the second single off the album following «Shiver». It was the lead single in (4) ____________ United States. The single reached number four in the UK Singles Chart. This gave the band (5) ____________ first top-five hit in the United Kingdom. Helped by heavy rotation and usage in promotions, the song made the band very popular. Various recording artists worldwide have since made their own versions of «Yellow». It remains one of the band’s (6) ____________ popular songs.
3. The Sahara Desert The Sahara in North Africa is the largest desert in the world except (1) ____________ Antarctica and is the largest hot desert. It (2) ____________ bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Atlas Mountains, the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and the Sahel region. It runs through many countries including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, and The Sudan. Most parts are uninhabited, but (3) ____________ people manage to survive in places where there is water. The Sahara Desert is about 9,000,000 square kilometres (3.5 million square miles) (4) ____________ size. It has been both larger and smaller at different times. After the last ice age, it became more fertile, then dried up again. It is the hottest place (5) ____________ the Earth, but not the driest. The driest is the Atacama Desert in South America. The Sahara has about the same size (6) ____________ the whole United States.
