conditional”

The third conditional is considered an unreal conditional, since it

refers to the past, but not to what actually happened, but to what

could have happened and how that fact would have had other

consequences or missed opportunities.

What rules do you have to keep in

mind?

As with the first conditional and the second conditional, here there are also two propositions or phrases: the one with the "if" and the main one, and not it matters which goes first. The basic structure is as follows: Proposición con “ if ”, … proposición principal. Estructura If + past perfect , … sujeto

  • would / wouldn't
  • have + participio pasado. Afirmativo If I had listened more , Si hubiera escuchado con más atención, I would have understood the lesson. habría entendido la clase. Negativo If I hadn't eaten three cheeseburgers , Si no me hubiera comido tres hamburguesas con queso, I wouldn't have had a stomach ache. no habría tenido dolor de tripa. Interrogativo If John had invited you to the party , Si John te hubiera invitado a la fiesta, would you have gone? ¿habrías ido? In the main statement we can also use “could”, to show that something would have been possible or that we would have had the ability to do so. Another possibility is to use "might", when we are not 100% sure which one it would have been the result of a concrete situation.
