Passive Voice – Complete Guidelines
1. The Golden Formula of the Passive
Passive = Object + BE (correct tense) + Past Participle (V3)
Only the tense of BE changes.
Step 1: Identify the tense in the active sentence.
Step 2: Keep the same tense — move it to BE.
Step 3: Use the past participle (V3) of the main verb.
2. Passive in All Main Tenses
Present Simple:
am / is / are + V3
Example: Houses are built.
Past Simple:
was / were + V3
Example: The house was built.
Present Continuous:
am / is / are + being + V3
Example: The house is being built.
Past Continuous:
was / were + being + V3
Example: The house was being built.
Present Perfect:
has / have + been + V3
Example: The house has been built.
Past Perfect:

  2. How to Choose the Correct Tense Common time markers: yesterday → Past Simple now / at the moment → Present Continuous already / yet → Present Perfect by 2028 → Future Perfect next year → Future (will / going to) since / for → Perfect tenses
  3. Common Mistakes to Avoid
  • Forgetting “been” in perfect tenses
  • Using past simple instead of past participle
