1. What, according to Salih’s discussion of Judith Butler’s work, is gender? What does it
mean to say that gender is performative? How is performativity different than
performance?
According to Salih, gender is not just a process, but a particular type of process. Therefore, with
that it means that it is not something general, but specific. Moreover, Butler has claimed that
gender is performative. For Butler, gender is performative because its constitution is a
consequence of the person’s subjectivity. By behaving the way you behave you are positioned
to a gender position. This position can be aligned with what is considered socially the role of a
woman or man. However, the individual can claim another position. All means that our acts
and choices, to some extent, are related to the creation of our gender.
After this claim, many questions arise about the difference between performance and
performativity and Judith Butler explains that it is pivotal to bear in mind those distinctions. On
the one hand, performance implies that there is a preexisting subject and on the other hand,
performativity refutes and rejects the idea of a subject. The latter idea is connected with the
linguistic concept of the performative act that was useful for Butler in her theories and
formulation of gender identity since it is language and discourse the ones that do gender and
not identity what does language.
2. What are some of the questions that have been raised about Butler’s conception of
gender performativity?
There are many questions that arise from the statement that gender is performative. Firstly, one
of the first questions is what are the implications that gender is performative and whether or not
the notion of performativity could be applied to other concepts such as race or social class.
Secondly, the question that is more significant is the difference between performance and
performativity since the former is extremely related to theatre and actors. Moreover, there are
many debates about the meaning of performativity. Another significant question posed by
sociologists is the contraposition of the “doer” and the “deed” that derives from the idea of

gender performative. Furthermore, there are people who wonder about the notion of “I” and the subject related to gender. Judith Butler has to face many criticisms regarding her notion of gender and sex as performative. Some of these criticisms were answered in the preface of a university edition of Gender Trouble. In the latter, she also accepts that there are many notions that she had to perfectioned and that are subject to further explanations. Therefore, she wrote another book called Bodies that Matter that tries to answer the questions that were not answered in the former book.

  1. Do you think that performativity is a useful way of thinking about other social identities, such as race, ethnicity, and class? Why or why not? If we talk about sex and gender as performative, we can think about relating this concept of performativity towards other social constructs such as race and class or ethinicity. As we appreciate in the article performativity could be used to define identities in the way that being born male or female does not determine behavior. Instead, people behave in a particular way to fit into society. Gender, race, ethnicity and classes are social prototypes that we use to classify and differentiate people. However, in reality people adapt to the environment they live in and try to fit as much as possible the group they belong to.
  2. How well does Weeks’ notion of sexual identities as necessary fictions complement Butler’s concept of sex and gender as performative? Weeks defends the idea that identities, as social constructs, are mainly fictious because they are an attempt of categorising inclusively the personal characteristics that conform every single person's identity. This macrocategories are, in his own words, "fictious, because every person lives his/her own identity in a very particular way that may widely differ from another person linked to the same sexual identity. This is in fact the same Butler affirms regardin g sex and gender: every singles person lives his/her own gender identity in the way he/she wants. Even two people categorised as "men" live and express their gender invery different ways, but, as sexual identities do, they promote uniteness between society.
  3. After reading this chapter, what do you believe is possible in regard to subverting hegemonic norms of gender, sex, and sexual identity?
