Present Perfect

We use the present perfect tense to talk about actions that

started in the past and continue to the present.

Present perfect tense

Example: I’ve grown flowers for two years.

2020-now Now is 2022.

Also to express… To talk about a recent finished activity. Mark has just called to inform about the new company’s project. I have just finished the presentation file for tomorrow. To emphasis the result of an action. I’m tired, I have read and answered 50 emails today. Nathalie has signed the new contracts all morning.

Structure: Subject+ have/has+ verb in past participle+ complement.

SINCE

We use since with the present perfect tense to refer to

the starting point of an action.

I have worked at this office since 2015.

(2015 is a point of time, not a period of time.) Now 2022 starting time 2015

FOR

We use for with the present perfect tense to refer to a period

of time.

I have worked at this office for 17 years.

(‘17 years’ is a period of time, not a point of time.) Now 2018 starting time since 2015 period of time (for three years)

Already / yet Have you signed the contracts yet? (question) Yes, I’ve already signed them. (positive) ‘Already’ goes in the MIDDLE or at the END of the sentence. or Yes, I’ve signed them already. (positive) In the Present Perfect tense, we use already with positive (yes) sentences.

once / twice How many times have you given a talk? (question) I’ve given a talk to my co-workers once only. ‘once’ goes at the END of the sentence. or I’ve given a talk to my co-workers only once. In the Present Perfect tense, we use once /twice to express frequency.
