Conditionals and

time clauses

Los condicionales describen el resultado

de una condición.

The if clause → the condition (If you

study hard)

The main clause → the result (you will

pass your exams).

El orden de las frases no altera el

resultado.

Usamos el primer condicional para hablar sobre situaciones en el futuro que creemos que son reales o posibles.

First conditional

If it doesn't rain tomorrow, we'll go to the beach.

Structure: if/when + present simple (condition) // will + infinitive (result).

Negative We can deny the condition, the result or both If I don’t find it, I will ask Greg

Interrogative Question Structure 1: If + Condition

  • Result “If class is canceled, what will you do?” Question Structure 2 : Result + If + Condition “What will you do if class is canceled?”

También es común encontrarse esta estructura con palabras como “ unless ”, “ as long as ”, “ as soon as ” o “ in case” en lugar de “if”.

El segundo condicional se usa para imaginar

situaciones en el presente o en el futuro

que en realidad no son probables.

Second conditional

If I won a lot of money, I would buy a big house in the country

Structure: if + past simple (condition)// + would + infinitive (result)

Se usa para imaginar como ciertas cosas podrían

haber sido distintas en el pasado. Hay que resaltar

que tanto la condición como el resultado son imposibles

ahora.

Third conditional

If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have felt sick (but I did eat a lot, and so I did feel sick).

Structure: if + past perfect // would + have + past participle

Third conditional

Negative

We can deny the condition,

the result or both

If I hadn’t felt well, I would

have stayed at home

Interrogative

Would + subject + have + participle (result) + past perfect simple (condition)

Would you have believed it if I told you before? Yes, I would have / No, I wouldn’t have

Any questions?

Activity

Conditional Race: Organize a competitive activity where students compete to complete conditional sentences correctly. Write different conditional fragments on cards or papers and place them around the classroom. Teams must race to find the cards and complete the sentences using the correct type of conditional.

Activity

Creative Writing Activity: Ask students to write short stories that include examples of all three types of conditionals. They can work individually or in groups, and then share their stories with the class. Encourage them to be creative and explore different scenarios and situations that require the use of conditionals.

Activity

Question and Answer Games: Organize a question and answer contest where students must respond using conditionals. Pose questions that require the use of different types of conditionals, and award points to teams that answer correctly. This can be a fun way to review conditionals and promote class participation.
