Reading Test – Unit 1: BE INSPIRED
When I was younger, I used to spend most of my time hanging out with my friends at the
park. We often played football or listened to music while we talked about our dreams. One
afternoon, as we were playing, we saw a woman painting a huge mural on a grey wall near
the playground. Her name was Laura, and she wanted to make our neighbourhood look
brighter and more positive. Laura was cheerful, active, and incredibly talented. She told us
that when she was a teenager, she had been very shy and nervous about showing her art
in public. But one day, while she was studying at art school, a teacher encouraged her not
to give up. “I realised that I couldn’t stop doing what I loved just because I was afraid of
other people’s opinions,” she said with a confident smile. Her words were so inspiring that
many of us decided to help her paint the mural. Over the next few weeks, we worked
together after school. While Laura was painting the main figures, we were adding small
colourful details. Everyone in the community looked up to her because she was not only
talented but also sociable and helpful. She always listened patiently and made us feel that
we were part of something important. Another person who inspires me is my uncle David.
He’s a sensible, calm, and ambitious doctor. When he was at university, he used to help
elderly people at a local care centre. One night, while he was helping an old man with his
medicine, he decided he wanted to become a doctor. He says that he enjoys dealing with
difficult situations and trying to make people’s lives better. Both Laura and David have
taught me that being sensitive, patient, and confident can truly make a difference.
Whenever I feel down or frustrated, I think about them — and it always cheers me up. I’ve
learned that we can all be inspiring in our own way if we take care of others and never give
up on our dreams.
