Saint Georges’ Day. National Day of England. April 23th.

Saint Georges is the saint patron of England, one of the kingdoms from United Kingdom. It’s celebrated on April 23th, and is, apart from Christmas, one of the most important festivities of England. Saint Georges also is the saint patron of Bulgaria, Georgia, Ethiopia and Portugal, among others. In Spain is celebrated too, especially in the ancient regions of the crown of Aragon, like Aragón or Cataluña. UNESCO has declared Saint Georges’ Day the World Book Day. This is because on April 23th two important authors died: Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.

The story of Saint Georges.

The English people say that Saint Georges was an English knight, but this is only said in England. The others countries agree that Saint Georges came from Cappadocia, actually in Turkey, so Saint Georges was a Turkish knight.

“A kingdom of Cappadocia was ravaged by a dragon. The king decided to give everyday two sheep to the dragon and to satisfy its hunger.
