STRANDING

Preposition stranding

  • Preposition stranding , sometimes called P-stranding , is the

syntactic construction in which a preposition with an object

occurs somewhere other than immediately next to its object.

  • i.e., a separation of the preposition from its completive, e.g.,

What is this for? That’s the film which I was talking about****.

  • This happens:
  • wh-interrogative sentences
  • relative clauses (cf. Carter and McCarthy, 2006:

This detachment of the two immediate constituents of a prepositional phrase may take place in the following cases:

  1. In WH-sentences and WH-clauses functioning as constituents of sentences. When the sentence is simple it is either interrogative or exclamatory.

Wh-clauses with postponed prepositions can fulfill most of the major sentence functions; they may be finite as well as non- finite. Which minister will the bridge be opened by? What a silly conclusion they have arrived at! What a drag you're letting yourself in for! What they argued about is not clear. Who are you going to Spain with?

3. Detachment of the immediate constituents of a prepositional phrase may take place in a finite or non-finite clause functioning as prepositional complement: So far, we have only been concerned with what plan we should give preference to.

The committee have been very hesitant about who to give the job to.
