Phrasal verbs usually take a direct object ( transitive phrasal verbs) We can place the adverb particle before or after the object: They turned the offer down; They turned down the offer ; except when the direct object is a pronoun e.g., I'm sorry I let you down vs. * I let down you  (^) If they do not take an object they are intransitive phrasal verbs (e.g., get up, bring something up, break down ).
