John Smith, The general history of Virginia. Summary.

Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, one of the first movers, needed assistance and some men like Captain John Smith, Master Edward Maria Wingfield, Master Robert Hunt etc., volunteered.

The trip was ready and there were orders to follow. These were put in a box, which could not be opened until they got to their destination, Virginia).

Nevertheless, on 19th of December (1606), they had to keep six weeks in the sight of England due to unprosperous winds. This period of time was quite bad because many of them became sick, like the preacher who decided to continue thanks to his god beliefs.

During the route they stopped in many places in which they made some trades with savages. Nevertheless. the voyage became quite long because they passed at least three days without seeing any rest of land. This fact annoyed a little bit the company.

That night the box was opened and the orders read: Bartholomew, John Smith, Edward Wingfield, etc., were chosen to be councils. Then, they had to choose a president in order to make decisions along with Major council.

Eventually they arrived to Powhatan, and it can be said that the real adventure started then.

During all the trip, there were problems with John Smith, who was committed as prisoner but fortunately the preacher got to reconcile them.

The troubles started there. Crew was starving, toil was harder and cause of this fifty people were buried. Hence, the president wanted to escape from those miseries and as a result of that he was replaced by Kendall. Meantime, John Smith tried to store some provisions. In addition, John Smith was interested in improve his knowledge, therefore six or seven men more or less went down the river to explode. death. Later on, the current president planned come back to England as well as Kendall, but Captain Smith spoiled his fled plan as well as he did with the previous president.

Thereafter, everything was quite O.K, but as in every story everything happened later.

The crew made an expedition and John Smith was captured as prisoner by savages. They were quite furious, therefore he tried to gain their confidence. He showed them a in order to teach them astronomy. They were amazed but this was not enough. There were a debate within the tribe, but they decided to kill him equally. It was then when Pocahontas interceded and saved him talking with her father, who eventually decided to let it go.

Personal opinion:

On the one hand this story is quite important because it shows an important part of the History, not only American history but also universal history. In addition it is portrayed perfectly human beings and the way of being of People and this is quite relevant because literature is a human invention after all.

On the other hand, from my point of view the reading is quite difficult to understand, or at least according to my level of English it is. I had some doubts during all the plot and in order not to have them I had to ask people these. Therefore, I can say that I had to spend a lot of time in this story. In addition, unlike the most part of the people I do not like Pocahontas' story.
