Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? High schools should allow students to study the courses that students want to study. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Hardly a week goes by without a debate on how to ameliorate the education system appearing in our newspaper. Some argue that students should study a predetermined list of courses, while others state that the student must be free to choose. From my perspective, I disagree with the statement because of the lack of maturity of students, the limitation of knowledge, and the uncertainty of future job expectations. Firstly, teenagers would not weigh their decision on what suits them in one subject or another. Most of them are not mature enough to make a decision that will determine their future study field. Some could even choose a course because it is easier or it lacks continuous examination. Moreover, when deciding to limit the spectrum of subjects, we are limiting our knowledge. Contrary to what some people argue, besides the importance of focusing on what amuses us, it is key to have a good ground on basic concepts of all subjects, to be cultured people with the ability to contribute to society. Lastly, over the years, and with the breadth of courses in the schedule, the probability of succeeding with our university career or with the job of our dreams is greater. For instance, since I was little, I wanted to be a doctor, but when I was introduced to economics classes I discovered my passion. The diversity of courses in my schedule allowed me to make the correct choice. In summary, students should have a basic knowledge of the essential subjects in order to make more mature and thoughtful decisions in the future, not limit the sphere of knowledge and make sure they are free to choose from a large bank of alternatives, unconstrained by what they decided as a child. Limiting knowledge will avoid having a rich formation and the growth of cultured people committed to society.
