1- The story begins with a sea storm in which sailors try the boat does
not sink. In the ship travels The King of Naples, his family and some of
his man. After that, in a Mediterranean Island Prospero is explaining
to his daughter Miranda his tragic family history in order to justify the
storm that he sent to the sailors. The man tells that he was the real
Duke of Naples and the current Duke, his brother, stole his throne.
Then Prospero calls his servant Ariel to bring Ferdinand, Duke’s son,
from the coast to where they are, as part of his plain. When Ferdinand
is in front of Prospero and Miranda, he falls in love with Prospero
daughter.
2- Prospero: He is the legitimate Duke of Milan but his brother steals him
the throne. He spends time in his library reading books. Prospero is
not only a Duke, he is also a father and worries about his daughter
Miranda and is educating her as a Princess. He represents the values
of the humanity. Prospero has spent his twelve years on the island
rening the magic that gives him the power he needs to punish and
forgive his enemies
Miranda: She is a beautiful young lady that represents purity, honesty
and comprehension. Miranda was brought to the island at an early
age and has never seen any men other than her father and Caliban,
though she dimly remembers being cared for by female servants as
an infant. Because she has been sealed o from the world for so long,
Miranda’s perceptions of other people tend to be naïve and non-
judgmental. She is compassionate, generous, and loyal to her father.
Miranda is around 15 years old because she was brought to the island
with 3 and has spend 12 years since she arrives.
Ferdinand: Son and heir of Alonso. Ferdinand seems in some ways to
be as pure and naïve as Miranda. He falls in love with her upon rst
sight and happily submits to servitude in order to win her father’s
approval.
Ariel – She is a Prospero servant. She is an spirit. Ariel is referred to
throughout this SparkNote and in most criticism as “he,” but his
gender and physical form are ambiguous. Rescued by Prospero from
a long imprisonment at the hands of the witch Sycorax, Ariel is
Prospero’s servant until Prospero decides to release him. He is
mischievous and ubiquitous, able to traverse the length of the island
in an instant and to change shapes at will. He carries out virtually
every task that Prospero needs accomplished in the play.
Caliban - Another of Prospero’s servants. He is not human but
sometimes he seem more human than other characters. Caliban, the
son of the now-deceased witch Sycorax, acquainted Prospero with the
island when Prospero arrived. Caliban believes that the island
rightfully belongs to him and has been stolen by Prospero. His speech
and behavior is sometimes coarse and brutal, as in his drunken

Caliban - Another of Prospero’s servants. He is not human but sometimes he seem more human than other characters. Caliban, the son of the now-deceased witch Sycorax, acquainted Prospero with the island when Prospero arrived. Caliban believes that the island rightfully belongs to him and has been stolen by Prospero. His speech and behavior is sometimes coarse and brutal, as in his drunken

scenes with Stephano and Trinculo (II.ii, IV.i), and sometimes eloquent and sensitive.

3- "what cares these roarers for the name of king,"

This statement is pronounced by the Boatswain when they are living the most intense moments of the storm. With this sentence he wants to express that all men, in despite of their power, are still subject to mother nature, so even the king could be hurt or killed by the storm.

4- Prospero uses a metaphor to compare his brother with ivy. He compares Antonio with the ivy because this plant climbs from the ground to the top of the trees and Antonio “climbs” until reach Prospero’s throne and control The duchy of Milan.

5- (^) In the quote Prospero indicates how he was able to improve his knowledge. He said that since he was alone on the island he decided to dedicate his time to a very important subject: the care of the mind.

6- When Prospero and his daughter were evicted from Milan by Antonio, an unknown man hurried them aboard into a boat and with this expression he wants to say that this was so unsafe even for the rats.

7- This is the part in which Prospero is referring to his appreciate library. One of the things that he reproaches to his brother is that Antonio expulsed him, and separated Prospero of his books which some of them are more important for him than his duchy. But after that, Prospero says that a man called Gonzalo brought him to the Island some books for his reading.

8- Ariel maybe mentions the names of Jupiter and Neptune to let us see that she took part on the storm that attacked the sip of the King of Naples. Jupiter in the classic mythology was known as the God of thunder and was represented with it. Neptune, for his part, was the god of the seas.

9- This is part of the Ariel’s intervention in which she is explaining how she does what Prospero wants. She says that everybody became a little mad, and all the people, except the mariners, dove into the sea, leaving behind the ship that she had set on fire. Saying that everybody jump off the ship except the mariners we can see how this people were faithful to his profession and life for the sea.

10- This is a speech given by Caliban in which he is saying to Prospero that he is the natural “king” of the Island through his mother Syncorax. Caliban is also saying that he feels cheated because when Prospero arrives at the Island he was very nice with Caliban and Prospero teach him to speak. For his part Caliban shows the Island to
