MORE TIPS FOR THE SPEAKING Exam

PART 1 (personal questions, 2 min.)

-Where are you from?  short answer

-Stay on topic

-Try not to produce neither short answers nor long answers

-Use LINKING WORDS (I like…, as well as…. Moreover….)

-Avoid PRESENT SIMPLE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE (sometimes it is necessary). How can I do that?

I have always loved….., but now…… (present perfect)

When I was young I used to …………, but now ……………. (used to)

Hardly ever do I go to the gym (instead of I never go to the gym/ You can use INVERSION with the adverbs seldom, hardly ever, rarely, barely ever in the first position of the sentence)

If only I had…. I wish I had…. (use if only/I wish + past simple)

PART 2 (comparing pictures, 1 min.)

-Focus on the question

-Use modal verbs (must, could, might, may, can't, couldn't + have + past participle)

sure possibility negative certainty

ex: She could have missed her train

-The examiner will ask you a question about the picture of your partner. Most times, you will be asked, if you like doing what you can see in the picture.

ex: Do you like exercising?

Well, it depends, if I can exercise with more people I enjoy it, but I hate exercising alone. ("it depends + zero conditional").

I used to exercise a lot when I was younger, but now I prefer going out with friends (used to).

PART 3 (topic debate and arranging an agreement, 2 min. discussion followed by a 1 min. decision-making task)

-Turn yourself in order to look at your partner

-Shall I start?/Should I go first or would you like to?

-Don't be too personal, you can add some examples, but the conversation is not about you, it is about the society in general

-Listen actively with short interruptions (mm, definitely, absolutely...)

-Try not always to say I agree with you (you can do it, but not always). How can you avoid it?

  1. Rephrase what your partner said. "Well, of course people need...."
  2. Link your contribution. "especially if they are..."
  3. Link your next prompt. "and for the same reason, moving to a new area..."

-Wait for the agreement until the examiner tells you to do it.
