What historical event in your country has had a major effect on your country? Give reasons and
examples to support your response.
My country has had an enormous amount (number) of historical events of major national and
international significance since its emancipation from the Spanish Crown, which happened
somewhere around the 19th century. As controversial it might be, I believe one of them has been
the Pacific War between Chile and the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation. In the following essay , I
will explore 2 reasons that explain my stance on this topic.
Firstly, the conclusion of this armed conflict forever changed the shape of the Chilean borders,
bringing economic advantages that can still be clearly seen today. To make a long story short, the
main causes of this war were political interests in territories shared by these 3 countries that were
rich in natural resources, mostly carbon mines. As Chile triumphed, it claimed all those lands to
itself. From then on, this gave my country a huge economical leap over both Peru and Bolivia.
On the other hand, the Pacific War was the beginning of some diplomatic conflicts with neighbour
neighbor countries that would last for many years to come. Putting aside the looser alliance,
seeing the attention that the Pacific War was gathering, Argentina took by force Chilean
Patagonian lands and would never give them back again. So, at the end, Chilean people would not
only have social and political tensions with their direct opponents of the Pacific War, but with this
third country as well.
To sum up, it is true that Chile has had many historical events with major national effects but
taking into account the points that I (have been) just developed, I firmly maintain that this has
been the one that has had the most economical, political, and social importance.
