TIME. SOMETIMES THE MEDICAL PROVIDER IS GIVING A LONG EXPLANATION TO THE PATIENT ABOUT HIS/HER CONDITION AND
THEIR PLANS FOR PATIENT RECOVERY. IF INTERRUPTED THEY MIGHT LOSE TRACK OF WHAT THEY’RE SAYING, ETC.
EXAMPLE : IN COURT, MANY INTERPRETERS ARE NOW USING DIGITAL RECORDERS IN THE LONG CONSECUTIVE MODE, THEN
PROVIDING SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION
HOWEVER, RECORDERS SOMETIMES FAIL FOR EXAMPLE WITH TECHNICAL PROBLEMS, ETC
BUT, LONG CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING WITH NOTE-TAKING MAY NOT BE THE BEST MODEL ALL THE TIME :
1. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL SPEECH AND THE INTERPRETED RENDITION IS TOO LONG
2. PARALINGUISTIC ELEMENTS (NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION, INTONATION, EMOTIONAL OUTBURSTS, ETC) ARE LOST.

 MACROSTRUCTURE : FRAMEWORK, THE WAY THE SPEECH IS BUILT UP (CONNECTION OF SENTENCES)

 MICROSTRUCTURE : WORDS, EXPRESSIONS THAT FORM I

 NOTE-TAKING FOR CONSECUTIVE INTEPRETING :

  • SKELETON STRUCTURE OF THE SPEECH
  • VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF YOUR ANALYSIS OF THE ORIGINAL SPEECH THE TRANSLATOR NEEDS TO ANALYZE IT, FINDING OUT:
  1. ITS STRUCTURE, PROGRESSION
  2. THE COMMUNICATIVE FUNCTION OF DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE SPEECH
  3. THE MAIN IDEAS AND SECONDARY ONES
  4. SPOTTING THE LINKS BETWEEN THEM THE TRANSLATOR MUST LISTEN TO THE SPEECH AND PROCEED THROUGH 2 FASES :

- QUICK, SIMPLE TO DRAW : LESS THAN 3 STROKES OF THE PEN BECAUSE MORE THAN 3 STROKES OF THE PEN IS

PROBABLY TWO SLOW

- DON’T IMPROVISE IN THE MIDDLE SPEECH

- ORGANIC : STARTING POINT FOR MANY OTHER SYMBOLS

- MUST MEAN SOMETHING TO YOU

3) LINKS :

- SIGNAL THE WAY THE SPEAKER WANTS THE LISTENER TO RELATE WHAT IS ABOUT TO BE SAID TO WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

BEFORE.

- SPEECH : IDEAS AND LINKS BETWEEN THEM

LINKS CAN GIVE DIFFERENT MESSAGES :

1) BRING IDEAS INTO RELATIONS WITH ONE ANOTHER

2) PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SITUATION
