Genetic modification, also known as genetic engineering, is the process of altering the genome, which is an organism's complete set of genetic material. Fields of application The number of items obtained through rDNA techniques has skyrocketed in recent years. Biotechnologically developed medicines and therapeutics are less expensive and can be produced in infinite amounts in medicine. Furthermore, genetic engineering allows scientists to cure a variety of human genetic disorders: when a person lacks a particular gene, correct copies of that gene can be provided, allowing the genetic condition to be cured. Artificial cloning Gene cloning, clinical cloning, and reproductive cloning are the three major forms of artificial cloning. Gene cloning Researchers use this technology to render duplicates of genes or DNA segments. Therapeutic cloning The term "therapeutic cloning" refers to the process of growing tissues and biological products that have therapeutic potential. Animals produced by reproductive cloning have the same DNA as any currently or previously living animals. Reproductive cloning A clone is a young animal that has the same genetic make-up as the animal that donated the somatic cell. Researchers may be able to use reproductive cloning to create copies of animals for use in medicine and agriculture.
